Biography

Pavel Sokov's work can be described as impressionistic realism. Specializing in oil painting, he began at the age of 7 and started selling commission portraits at 17. When he was 24 years old, Sokov was approached by Time Magazine to paint the cover of the Time's illustrious Person of the Year edition. Pavel Sokov's work has been featured in many publications and has won several awards, including Circle Foundation's Artist of the Year Award, Oil Painters of America's President's Award of Excellence, and NOAPS' Best Figure Painting Award. Through working with Time Magazine, the Bahrain Royal Family, Saudi Royal family, the Jordan Royal Family, Fortune 500 Companies and well known entrepreneurs, his work is found in collections across the world.

Born in Moscow, and having immigrated to Montreal at the age of 10, Pavel Sokov discovered early in life his two passions: Science and Art. Cutting-edge scientific ideas from Science Fiction authors, Stanislaw Lem and Isaac Asimov were the main inspiration for Sokov's earlier artistic endeavors. Pavel transitioned to realistic portraiture, his current focus, after attending Watts Atelier. Working with live models motivated Pavel to focus on authentic storytelling. He is fascinated by the narratives, textures, traditions and people he encountered throughout his many world travels, which birthed his series "Stories of the World".

Sokov was inspired to spearhead the "Gravitas Project", which combines his early artistic inspiration with his new attention to storytelling, by the recent advancements of DNA restructuration and genome editing capabilities of CRISPR-Cas9. The mainstream media has paid little attention to this ground-breaking contribution to science, and the team responsible for CRISPR-Cas9 has remained in relative obscurity. Gravitas will commemorate scientific achievements like this.

Gravitas will enshrine 20 scientific leaders by painting their realistic representational portraits. The project began with 20th-century scientists that helped modernize and paved the way for present-day scientific research. Six famous historical figures have already been memorialized: Albert Einstein, Marie-Curie, Charles Darwin, George Washington Carver, Jonas Salk, and Buzz Aldrin.
