Paying Attention to Advent

Imagine a brightly colored classroom filled with preschoolers. They play noisily at stations—a toy kitchen, a block table, an art center—until a familiar chant begins.

"One, two, three," their teacher sing-songs, "eyes on me."

On the first day of school, those words may have been largely ignored. But chances are that after just a few weeks, most of the students have been trained to stop what they are doing and focus on their teacher.

In a recent CT Advent devotional, Craig L. Blomberg reminds us that "the Christian life is all about deferring more and more to Jesus, the Mighty God." Life’s joys and challenges often consume our focus. But the Advent season invites us to remember the one who, as Blomberg writes, "deserves all the attention."

We can worship God through our work and play, to be sure. The children enthralled by their classroom activities were honoring their teacher before she addressed them just as they were when she chanted and they looked at her. The call for them, and for us, is simply this: when it’s time to set our attention, may we do so with joy and obedience, confident in the one we behold.
