BY CHRISTIAN CLARK | Staff writer We are less than two weeks from the Feb. 10 trade deadline, and it feels like the Pelicans are going to try to pull off a big move. They've mostly kept their powder dry after trading Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday for future first-round picks. They have nine of them in the next six drafts. For a variety of reasons, it feels like the team's front office is going to push hard for an upgrade at guard. For one, the West is weaker than usual. There is a prime opportunity to vault into a play-in tournament slot with an upgrade at guard. Secondly — let's be honest here — David Griffin's job is potentially on the line. His first two years were an abject failure. His third year has been...pretty good. He got the Willie Green hire right. The Jonas Valanciunas trade/extension look like good moves. Bringing in a third star next to Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson would seemingly help his chances of staying on. Third and finally, going out and getting CJ McCollum or De'Aaron Fox shows Ingram and Williamson that you're serious as a front office about winning. Ingram is in his sixth season, and he's never made the playoffs. He's playing excellent basketball under Willie Green. Why not go out and get him a guard to ease some of the offensive burden? Our columnist Scott Kushner writes that the Pelicans should trade for McCollum. I'm with Kushner: The time is right for the Pelicans to aggressively pursue him. I think acquiring him or Fox would be great moves. Trading for either would likely require the Pelicans to part ways with Josh Hart, Tomas Satoransky, other salary filler and one or more future firsts. Sending out Hart, who's in the midst of a career season, would be a big loss. But neither McCollum nor Fox seem gettable using only salary filler and draft capital. The Pelicans will likely have to give up a good player in Hart. I can't wait to see what the next 13 days hold. -- Christian |
