BY CHRISTIAN CLARK | Staff writer The Pelicans didn't have many representatives at All-Star Weekend. Herb Jones played in the Rising Stars Game. CJ McCollum participated in the 3-point Contest. The team had nobody in the Sunday night marquee event. Should have been a quiet weekend, right? Wrong. Saturday, McCollum revealed he and star forward Zion Williamson hadn't spoken since McCollum was traded to New Orleans, comments that caused a three-alarm fire. On Tuesday, former Pelican JJ Redick criticized Williamson for being a "detached" teammate. How did it get to this point? I tried to make sense of it all. There are a lot of parties who deserve blame here. David Griffin created an unstable work environment in Williamson's first two seasons by firing two coaches and turning over the roster twice. Williamson hasn't worked hard enough to get himself into playing shape since he was drafted by the Pelicans. He showed up to training camp well north of 300 pounds. And since he and his camp took control of his rehab from right foot surgery in January, things haven't gone well. It's an enormous mess. Meanwhile, the Pelicans are pressing forward without their young star. They actually have something to play for during their final 23 regular-season games. Making the play-in tournament without Williamson would be a legitimate accomplishment. -- Christian |
