View in browser MARCH 28, 2020 Hospitals around the country are quickly running out of an item crucial to the care of critically ill COVID-19 patients: Ventilators.
On Friday, President Trump invoked and signed the Defense Production Act, compelling General Motors to begin manufacturing ventilators. Later that day at the Coronavirus Task Force Briefing, he said that U.S. companies would make 100,000 of them in the next 100 days. But it’s unclear if that is technically feasible.
Trump also used the briefing to criticize governors who had sought federal help to get ventilators and other essential supplies to hospitals where they’re desperately needed, saying that they should be more “appreciative” of his efforts if they expect help.
Also on Friday, Trump signed the $2 trillion coronavirus relief act into law. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was not invited to the signing ceremony, despite having negotiated the bill. No other Democrats were invited.
In a conversation with Rachel Maddow, Pelosi called the bill "a very big down payment, but we have much more to do."
