A very happy Sunday to you. New here? Welcome! Each weekend, I share a few longer tips and tricks to keep your tech life safe — and maybe even put some money back in your pocket.

As for today’s trivia, how much does the average YouTuber make every time someone watches a video on their channel? Is it $0.018, 10 cents, 25 cents or 50 cents? Answer at the end.

😴 No new emails from me and the team tomorrow. We’re taking Labor Day to rest and recharge. Hope you do the same! — Kim

Trick to know who’s calling

Trick to know who’s calling

I'm psychic. I know who's calling me without even looking at my phone. Just kidding — if I really was psychic, I'd know all the winning lottery numbers and be living on a private island in the Maldives.

The trick is to give each of your contacts a custom vibration. This way, you know from the discrete buzzes if this is a call you can't miss or one you can ignore. Think of it as the quiet version of custom ringtones, since so many of us keep our phones silenced.

This is a pet peeve of mine. You know who you are. In public, from your phone comes … incessant sounds from games or playing a video so loudly everyone has to listen to it. Stop that. (Was that a collective "Thank you, Kim," I just heard?)

On your iPhone

Here’s how to set up custom vibrations the easy way:

  • Go to your Contacts, tap the person’s name, select Edit, then Text Tones.
  • Tap Vibration and select one from the list.
  • Have fun with it. Maybe you select the heartbeat vibration for your partner and the alert vibration for your kid away at school.

You can use this same menu to give each contact a custom ringtone and text alert. You might as well go all the way while messing around in your settings.

On your Android

Every Android manufacturer and model is different, so your steps may vary slightly.

  • In your Contacts menu, select More, then Vibration Pattern.

From now on, you’ll know exactly who's calling without picking up your phone.

I phoned out about it

Ever want to call someone but don't want them to know your number? Oh, you're gonna love this. It works for all smartphones and landlines. Open your phone's keypad and dial *67, followed by your recipient's phone number.

One final bit of phone tech wisdom. Did you know calling back a strange number can confirm your place on a spam list? Hide your number first if you really can't resist calling back.

DEAL OF THE DAY

Ditch the gunky dish brush

Ditch the gunky dish brush

Those get grimy so fast. That’s probably why this reusable scrubber is so popular. You can toss it in the dishwasher and it dries quickly since it’s thin. Plus, it doesn't scratch your dishes, so scrub away! Love this review: “I always have spares on hand for myself and others.”

Upgrade your kitchen!

YOU SHOULD KNOW

Da bomb: A guy in León, Guanajuato, Mexico, ordered a smartphone online. What arrived instead? A fragmentation grenade. He called authorities, and the bomb squad successfully deactivated it. I bet the guy didn’t expect his story to blow up like this.

I spy a drone in the sky: I thought this was super interesting. The NYPD is deploying its drone fleet this Labor Day weekend to follow up on complaints. If there’s a call about a large party and too much noise, they'll send a drone over the person’s backyard. The NYPD promised no “warrantless surveillance” when they launched their drone program. That didn’t last long.

Nuts and bolts: Why get your thrill on with a real person when an AI chatbot is always standing by? That’s the new trend in social media advertising. NBC News found more than 1,000 on Facebook and Instagram alone, even though these ads are — and have always been — banned. Yup, Meta never meta way not to bend the rules to make money.

You’re entering the swipe zone: A new dating trend goes like this: Guy and gal go on a date. Guy pays. Three days later, he asks the gal out for a second date. The gal says, “Nope.” The guy then sends her a Venmo request to pay her share of the first date’s meal. Dating/good human advice: If you pay for someone’s drink, meal, whatever, don’t expect anything in return.

✋ Netflix’s PR machine in action? The collective internet is losing it over a show critics said was meh: “Who is Erin Carter?” They say this seven-part series following a teacher with a dark past is a solid 10/10. But the Rotten Tomatoes rating is 67%, and it’s at 6.4 out of 10 on IMDb. Meanwhile, Chris Rock’s Netflix special just slaps!

MY TRUSTED ADVICE

I talk to such interesting people on my national radio show. With 425 radio stations across the country airing it, I’m sure there’s one near you. Hear my convos with these folks and others, plus lots more I don’t get to in these great, free newsletters!

  • Jason Koebler from 404 Media joins me to discuss his investigation into sketchy Instagram ads that promote money scams, hard drugs and stolen credit cards.
  • Deborah from Kona, Hawaii, is concerned after the Maui fires. She's wondering how to keep in touch if her phone's lost. I gave her some good options for communicating sans phone.
  • Zach Edwards is a cybersecurity pro who’s cracked the code on how con artists are scamming kids on Roblox — using PDFs.

I also helped David make a QR code for his Wi‑Fi, Mark find the cheapest cell plan for traveling, Dennis understand his smart thermostat’s privacy settings, Dave buy the right all-in-one printer for his wife’s travel agency and more.

TECH LIFE UPGRADES

That’s why you’re coughing: You can monitor air quality without downloading anything new. Just open Google Maps and search for your location. You'll see an Air Quality option in the menu. So handy.

🎥 Sharing is caring: You can easily share a Nest cam’s view, but do not select a public link. That means anyone with the link can see the stream without a password. Open the app, pick the camera you want to share, then go to Settings > Camera sharing. Choose Share with password. If you ever want to stop sharing, there’s a Shop sharing camera option.

Student in the family? A student Amazon Prime account is a heck of a lot cheaper than a standard account. Students get six months free, then half off a year ($69).

Your cell signal stinks: When you need to make a call, there’s a quick fix that works. Wi‑Fi calling uses your internet instead of a cell signal. On iPhone: Settings > Phone > Wi‑Fi Calling. Android steps vary based on the manufacturer, but try going to your Phone app, click the three dots to open Settings, and find Wi‑Fi calling.

🧘 Feeling creaky? Our amazing Content Queen Allie loves this YouTube channel for great stretches for your hips, shoulders, knees and everything else bugging you.

WHAT THE TECH?

What the tech?

He looks just like his grandma, Betty Croaker.

UNTIL NEXT TIME ...

📺 The answer: On average, a YouTuber earns around $0.018 for each view, which amounts to $18 for every 1,000 views. That reminds me … What do you call a YouTube sensation with a computer virus? A social influenza.

🍽️ On my weekend cooking list: Chicken teriyaki burgers with sesame slaw. I wish I had the patience to make homemade ricotta.

Happy weekend! Hope you can spend quality time with the people you love … or take a really nice nap. I’ll be back in your inbox Tuesday with the best free tech newsletter in the world. Until then, stay amazing, friend! — Kim
