Field of Images provides a comprehensive overview of the artist’s career, focusing not only on his photography but also another of his main expressive supports, the photobook, a crucial narrative mechanism for defining the history of photography in Latin America. His six decades as a photographer offer a broad itinerary through several mutating cityscapes: Caracas, Havana, São Paulo, and Mexico City, not forgetting feedback from Munich, Paris, London and Barcelona.
The exhibition is divided into sixteen sections that feature some of the artist’s most important projects, with an emphasis on his photobooks, which the photographer recognizes as a means of expression that is just as valid has his photographs. | |

In 1966 she began taking photographs of the people in her city as a way of understanding the emotional world of those around her. In 1979, after several trips around Europe, Ross definitively focuses on the portrait genre and marksa turning point in this genre with her images. Thanks to the use of large format, she manages to capture the past, present and even the future of the subjects posing before her lens. | |

| Barbara Niggl Radloff The car ride, Munich, um 1960 © Münchner Stadtmuseum | | Barbara Niggl Radloff » Intimate Distance | | 19 November 2021 – 20 March 2022 | | | | | | | | Artist Barbara Niggl Radloff (1936–2010), after spending her youth surrounded by the ruins of the Second World War, discovered photography, seeing in it the ideal medium to document the story of the people of post-war Munich and the stark reality of their lives. Niggl Radloff left behind an impressive body of work from her early career as a photojournalist and her many years spent creating portraits of artists. In 2018, the Radloff family donated her artistic estate to the Münchner Stadtmuseum Photography Collection. The archive contains more than 2,500 prints and in excess of 50,000 negatives. Her oeuvre occupies a unique place in post-1945 German photography yet has largely been overlooked until very recently. The Münchner Stadtmuseum is now privileged to present a major retrospective of her work to the public for the first time.
In the words of Museum Director, Frauke von der Haar: "We are delighted to present the first major retrospective of Barbara Niggl Radloff’s work. This allows us to showcase one of the leading 1960s photojournalists and an outstanding portrait photographer. Niggl Radloff’s fascinating early photographs capture the quintessence of post-war Munich and the optimism of the 1960s."
After completing a preliminary course at Munich’s "Meisterschule für Mode" (Master School of Fashion), Niggl Radloff studied photography under Hans Schreiner at the city’s "Institut für Bildjournalismus", one of post-war Germany’s leading photography schools. | PAUL CAPONIGRO Winter, Redding Woods, CT, c. 1960 3 5/16 x 4.5” unique one-of-a-kind vintage Polaroid, Type 53 | | Paul Caponigro » Polaroids 1960-1969 | | 19 November 2021 – 15 January 2021 | | Opening reception: Friday, 19 November, 5-7pm | | | | | | | | Obscura Gallery is honored to debut an exclusive gallery exhibition of vintage, one-of-akind Polaroid prints made during Paul’s tenure with the Polaroid Corporation in the 1960’s.
In 1959, Ansel Adams introduced the Polaroid Corporation to Paul’s work and that following year Paul became a consultant to the company, testing out their Type 55 negative/positive film, and their Type 53 positive film on his 4 x 5 view camera using a Polaroid back. The 44 images in the exhibition were created in New England as well as Ireland and a majority of the prints were created on Polaroid Type 53 which does not produce a negative and creates a one-of-a-kind positive print. The project came to a close in 1969 with a selection of images created in Ireland, when that same year Paul began his Guggenheim fellowship photographing in that country. Other than exhibiting the work at the Polaroid Corporation and a couple of universities or non-profits this is the first extensive gallery exhibition of this unique work.
In 1988 this project was published by the Polaroid Corporation in the book "Seasons", which also included a biographical essay written by the photographer and shares the course of his artistic development during these early years – telling the story of how he began his passion for photography at a very young age, alongside his passion for the piano and classical music.

This spectacular trove of works, with a low-end estimate of EUR 1.3 million, includes works of museum-level importance and of breathtaking quality and beauty. That they will be put up for auction with us is a mark of confidence in the German market – and in our expertise.
The auction’s top lot is Helmut Newton‘s legendary diptych "Sie Kommen" (Dressed/Naked). Created in 1981 for French VOGUE, this is one of the iconic images of Newton’s oeuvre: Four women in the studio, striding forward in high heels – and nothing else! The second image shows the women stepping toward us in exactly the same arrangement, but this time, they are dressed. Viewing both images side by side makes us aware that nudity can be more than just erotic allure; it can also be a statement of self-confidence and verve (EUR 150,000/200,000). Another standout is "Dovima with Elephants," created in 1955 by the consummate visualizer of absolute beauty, Richard Avedon: The top model Dovima, resplendent in a black evening gown with sash by Christian Dior, poses between two circus elephants. With an allegorical nod, the figures refer to the fairytale of "Beauty and the Beast." The image often has been described as the most famous fashion photo of the 20th century, testifying as it does to a golden age of glamour (EUR 100,000/150,000).

| | | | | | | | It is a picture that everyone knows and that has never lost its appeal despite being reproduced many times: Derrière la Gare Saint-Lazare (Behind the Gare Saint-Lazare) is the ingenious picture Henri Cartier-Bresson took in 1932 of his now legendary »puddle jumper«. Like no other, this masterly shot stands for his photographic approach, which was only explained twenty years later in the photobook Images à la Sauvette (The Decisive Moment). The jumping man is captured a split second before the moment when his foot would have touched the smooth surface of the water and destroyed the perfect reflection. This motif of doubling occurs several times and in complex intertwinings in this photographic icon, which comes up for auction in an excellent, very rare large-format exhibition print from 1960 and is sure to be one of the most sought-after lots of the 24th OstLicht Photo Auction (estimate: 30,000 - 35,000 €).
Certainly, no less coveted among collectors is Robert Frank's shot from the Candy Store, 86th Street, which he took in 1958 for his groundbreaking book The Americans. For the photographer, who died two years ago, the group of teenagers crowded around a jukebox was one of the paradigmatic motifs with which he aptly described the US lifestyle of the 1950s like no other. OstLicht is auctioning the approximately 60-year-old, well-preserved vintage print of this photograph, which is also one of the highlights of the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago (estimate: 35,000 - 40,000 €).

Whether it is looking for new supports, hybrid techniques or a new relationship to reality, this event tends to demonstrate that photography never stops inventing. In this, the Tangible Image Biennale supports the emergence of new languages and new practices related to photography : a photograph which upsets the assumptions of reality, a photograph which changes in nature, form and postulate, and which thus participates in a broadening of the field of its discipline.
The second edition of the Tangible Image Biennale focuses its calendar on the month of November 2021. It retains its roots in the 20th arrondissement, following the idea already acclaimed by the public to draw an artistic journey in eastern Paris.
Its program revolves around an exhibition curated by the organizers of the Biennale, and ten exhibitions bringing together the 31 winning artists of the call for projects (February - May 2020), selected by a jury of professionals from the world of art, image and photo. As well as an Instagram prize, an afternoon of meetings and discussions, and an in situ project in the public space.
The 2021 edition of the Biennale is the one which was to be held in 2020 but which has been postponed for health reasons. | |
