Since the 1980s, Dayanita Singh has pioneered a genre-defying approach to photography that pushes the limits of the medium. Dancing with my Camera presents the major phases of the internationally renowned artist’s oeuvre, from her earliest works through today. Along with key past works, including her “museums”, the new project, Let’s See , is especially realised for the Gropius Bau exhibition.

The group exhibition New Anatomies is centered around Ulrike Ottinger's „Das Geheimnis der Madame X (Tabea Blumenschein)“ from 1977. Based on this iconic photograph, Sara-Lena Maierhofer and Flo Maak have selected works by fellow artists that relate to different aspects of Ottinger's work and contribute their own perspectives on identity, gender, body and desire.

"I wish to escape from a crystallised identity..."
Josephine de Collage (Yvonne Rainer) in „Madame X. Eine absolute Herrscherin“, 1977

Images of heroes have long been cast in bronze, often placed on a horse and raised on a pedestal so that future generations would remember the achievements of these men. Some of these supposed heroes have been pushed from their thrones and turned into scrap metal. Many still await their fall. What to do with the vacated pedestals is being debated. Should we immortalize our heroines there or demonstratively leave the pedestals unoccupied to draw attention to the untold stories of unknown heroines?

Rarely does a woman find herself enshrined as a statue, and when she does, it is more as a reclining muse, admired not for her (heroic) deeds but for her beautiful being. While heroines are already barely visible - in public space as well as in museums and history books - non-binary and trans-identitary figures in history are virtually invisible. There is also a lack of adequate representation for the memory of the collective movements to which we owe visibility, participation, and freedom in the choice of partners, professions, and identities.

For those born in the 1980s, like us, pop culture figures in the 1990s allowed us to break out of our small-town identity tristesse. We didn't have a vocabulary to desc…

The photographs of Thomas Wunsch depict many different subjects and by making those subjects abstract - beyond recognition - he confers them a special aesthetic value. It is in these pictures that we encounter a kafkaesque symbolism and a very different kind of emotion. Objects lose their outline and seem to disappear. It is the in-between spaces that Thomas Wunsch wants to fill in. Looking at these photographs we can also get a sense of time and space, of movement and security - or a lack of those qualities.

Thomas Wunsch skillfully plays with our sensory perception. Our eyes are stimulated by light. The brain then interprets these stimuli by adding information to form a visual image. Imagination creates our view of the world by using the filters of our emotions, perceptions and experiences. Thus the photographs of Thomas Wunsch give the viewer more than just a fixed view of the world. "What you see is what you get" is the photographer’s underlying concept.

The highly distinctive photographs of Thomas Wunsch are a result of his attention to detail and his sophisticated digital processing, giving them a magical and mysterious quality. And because they are also very rhythmic, the distinguished German record company ECM has been publishing them for the past 22 years as CD and LP covers.

Thomas Wunsch started working in the field of photography at age 17, when he moved to the USA and became a member of the Kodak Young Photographers League. When he opened a photo studio in Hamburg he devoted himself to fashion, still life and portrait photography. He took pictures of Barbra Streisand, Sir George Solti, Frank Zappa, Yoko Ono, Ethan Hawke, Meg Ryan, Christo, Juergen Teller, Dalai Lama, Jeff Koons, Debra Winger, Adrien Brody, Hilar…

Former nomadic communities are just one of the topics of Ferhat Bouda’s work. Through impressive visual narratives, the photographer documents the life and survival of the cultures in transition. For ten years Bouda has sought out isolated desert communities and mountainous earthen abodes, traditional urban neighbourhoods and farming villages spread across North Africa, concentrating on the everyday life of today’s Imazighen, "free people", a term many now prefer to the more familiar term Berbers. In his often mysterious stark black and white images, the harsh landscapes of Mongolia are also the backdrop for Bouda’s themes.

The exhibition FERHAT BOUDA. PHOTOGRAPHS AND DIARIES shows people living in tents or in sewers, families earning a living on small farms, or scavenging on rubbish dumps, travellers by camel and motorbike: shadowy silhouettes that blend into the environments in which they live. And yet they are equally threatened, whether by climate change, political conflict or for other reasons.

Diverse social communities spark Bouda’s interests in the Main metropolis Frankfurt as he often photographs punks, protesters, the train-station milieu or religious festivals. Like all of the artist’s visuals, these too question cultural resilience and the human in a constantly changing world.

In addition to photographs and multimedia presentations of Ferhat Bouda’s work, the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (FFF) exhibits various diaries by the artist, with drawings and photographs, accompanied by texts in Berber, French and German. The show was curated by Celina Lunsford, artistic director of the FFF, and co-curator Esra Klein.

Barbara Kruger: Thinking of You . I Mean Me . I Mean You. is a major exhibition devoted to the work of Barbara Kruger, one of the most significant and visible artists of our time. Spanning four decades, this exhibition is the largest and most comprehensive presentation of Kruger’s work in 20 years; it spans her single-channel videos from the 1980s to digital productions of the last two decades, and includes large-scale vinyl room wraps, multichannel video installations, and audio soundscapes throughout LACMA’s campus. As an active consumer and vigilant viewer of popular culture, Kruger grapples with the accelerated ways pictures and words instantaneously flow through media. How they are simultaneously played and re-played informs her most recent video works, which are an exhibition highlight. Barbara Kruger: Thinking of You . I Mean Me . I Mean You. is a visually compelling gathering of groundbreaking artwork that is resonant, courageous, and crucial.

René Groebli, born in 1927 in Zurich, belongs to a generation of Swiss photographers who, after the Second World War, left their mark on the history of 20th century photography. As a student of Hans Finsler in the famous photography class at the Zurich School of Art, which was also attended by Robert Franck, Werner Bischof and René Burri, he freed himself from the research of the new objectivity of the 1920s.

The young photographer made his mark by creating images rather than taking them, and by placing as much emphasis on emotion as on information. A photographer who dissociated himself from professional classifications, René Groebli left photojournalism at the age of 26 and distinguished himself by a personal style of writing in perpetual movement.

The photographer made his mark in 1949 with the series "La Magie du Rail", a black and white railway adventure. Placed in the locomotive, he records with masterly poetry the mechanical odyssey of the steam engine; what he creates at the age of 24 is a cinematographic narrative that imposes the rhythm of another era, the movement takes time, the landscape scrolls to the rhythm of the sleepers and the stone tunnels that mark out the course of the train.

In these images, the whistling and the noise, we feel the steam, the smoke, the heat, the whole soul of train travel. This accurate and poetic view was exalted by René Groebli in 1953 in "L'Œil de l'Amour". In his photographs he conveys the sensual and amorous feelings of the honeymoon in Paris with his wife Rita. It is probably one of the most beautiful declarations of love in the history of photography, created almost twenty years before Nobuyoshi Araki's "Sentimental Jour…

As part of the special exhibition PHOTOBOOKS. Art Page by Page the Leipzig Photobook Festival  will take place from 18 to 20 March at the GRASSI Museum for Applied Arts. In the lower and upper foyers, national and international exhibitors will present current publications and projects. From individual artists and photographers to small and medium-sized independent publishers: The fair enables a direct encounter with the makers. The fair will be accompanied by readings, talks, portfolio-reviews and a get-together.
