EMOP Berlin – European Month of Photography 2025 | | | | | | | | JARMUSCHEK + PARTNER is pleased to present the first solo show of Emma Sarpaniemi in its gallery space at Potsdamer Straße. The exhibition is part of the European Month of Photography Berlin 2025.
"Two Ways to Carry a Cauliflower" (2021-ongoing) is a performative photography series exploring women’s self-portraiture through play. To free the subject and the gaze from certain patriarchal ideals of femininity, the subject depicted in the images is portrayed playfully and tenderly as a woman who behaves, looks, and performs on her terms and rules.
Often, playfulness can be perceived as naivety when associated with a female artist. Sarpaniemi, however uses it as a source of power. The portrayed characters offer the possibility to continuously reconstruct oneself. In her universe, identity, reality, and imagination intertwine. Sarpaniemi is not creating an alter ego, but instead, presenting an honest representation, in which she recognize herself.
Sarpaniemi stages the scenes, selects the clothes, and designs the self-portraits herself. The starting point for self-portraits is often an object or a clothing found at a flea market, from which the artist begins to construct a photograph. Sometimes traces of friends’ presence and collaboration appear in self-portraits through a painted house, blue lips, wooden frames, or a friend focusing behind the camera.
Emma Sarpaniemi (b.1993) is based in Helsinki. In her practice, she explores womanhood and definitions of femininity through performative self-portraits. For her, self-portraiture is a playground, a realm for exploring representation and resisting conventions of the gaze. Collaboration and collectivity hold an important role in her work. Courtesy the artist | | Nan Goldin » This Will Not End Well | | ... until 6 April 2025 | | | | | | | | Neue Nationalgalerie’s retrospective is the first exhibition in Germany to present a comprehensive overview of Goldin’s work as a filmmaker. The exhibition is installed in six unique buildings designed by Hala Wardé, an architect who frequently works with Goldin. Each building is designed in response to the specific piece. Together they constitute a village. "I have always wanted to be a filmmaker. My slideshows are films made up of stills," says Nan Goldin.
The exhibition is comprised of: The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (1981–2022), her magnum opus; The Other Side (1992– 2021), a historical portrait produced as an homage to her trans friends whom she photographed 1972–2010; Sisters, Saints and Sibyls (2004–2022), a testament to the trauma of families and suicide; Fire Leap (2010–2022), a foray into the world of children; Memory Lost (2019–2021), a claustrophobic journey through drug withdrawal; and Sirens (2019–2020), a trip into drug ecstasy.
Nan Goldin (born in Washington D.C. in 1953) is one of the most high-profile artists of our time. Her work's exploration of the human experience is legendary and has profoundly influenced subsequent generations. Her first work, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, documents life in Provincetown, the Lower East Side of New York City, Berlin and London beginning in the 1970s and 80s and up to the present day. Goldin photographed the world of her inner circle of creative, bohemian friends with raw tenderness. Her photographs give us snapshots of intimacy and coupling, the quotidian and wild parties, and the struggle between autonomy and dependency.

| Steven Cruz "Angústia Silenciosa" - Échappée Belle © CDI / Laurent Sturm, 2024 | | Saison 2024 – 2025: NOVUM ASPECTUM | | Jörg Auzinger » DESTINESIA Steven Cruz » ANGÚSTIA SILENCIOSA Raoul Ries » CÒRREC SEC Letizia Romanini » SUNOUSIA Luisa Maria Stagno » COUPABLE? Emilie Vialet » THE ETHERNAL Samantha Wilvert » LES ENFANTS DU CORBUSIER | | ... until 7 September 2025 | | | | | | | | The exhibition invites you to see the world with different eyes. At a time when the flood of information and visual impressions often leads to a uniform, almost automated way of seeing, the exhibition asks: How does our perception change when we break out of familiar patterns and take on different perspectives? The works on display open up unexpected angles and invite you to question and expand your own view.
In his new series of photographs on the marketplace, Steven Cruz focuses, showing how a district of Lisbon, steeped in history and emotion, was pushed into the shadows of its own existence during the reconstruction in 2001 and lost its soul to urbanization.
In the arcades, towards the church, the artist Emilie Vialet takes us to European zoos, where our gaze is drawn to the 'naturalness' in artificial environments.
In the garden opposite the church, Samantha Wilvert shows us her photo documentary of the world of children living in Le Corbusier's Cité Radieuse in Briey.
Jörg Auzinger's photo series in the arcades of the Grand-Rue creates spaces in terms of both visual appearance and content that go beyond superficial observation and serve as food for thought. Associations and memories are given space and the perception of reality is questioned.
At eye level with the city pigeons, a change of perspective in the brewhouse garden. Luisa Maria Stagno's portraits of pigeons show the individuality, the richness of form and colour of the pigeons and invite us to rethink our perception of these animals.
In the castle garden, we join the artist Raoul Ries on a journey to the south of France, where in 2023 the worst drought in decades has occurred. Climate change seems to be causing such events to become more frequent and extreme.
Clervaux - Cité de l'image is extending the route with a new location at the train station, where the artist Letizia Romanini is creating a cartography of fragile spaces that are threatened with disappearance, evoking a sense of solastalgia, a longing for a bygone, unchanging environment.
By exploring unfamiliar perspectives, everyday objects, landscapes and situations are rediscovered and their hidden facets revealed. The seven artists invite us to look at the world around us differently and to discover the unexpected in the familiar.

| Hervé Guibert Sienne, 1979 Vintage gelatin silver print © Christine Guibert Courtesy Les Douches la Galerie, Paris | | Hervé Guibert » Voyages en Italie | | ... until 5 April 2025 | | | | | | | | Les Douches la Galerie is delighted to present Voyages en Italie, a new exhibition dedicated to Hervé Guibert. Through portraits of his friends, his lovers, and still lifes of intimate objects, made between 1979 and 1990, the exhibition shows the central role Italy played in the journey of the writer-photographer, both as a source of aesthetic inspiration and as a realm of creativity.
Hervé Guibert was a writer. Hervé Guibert was a photographer. Between the two, the connection is powerful and the result delightful. When a phrase strikes in one of his books, it flutters into an image. When a whimsical humor shakes a sentence, it ripples through a photograph. When melancholy appears in the title of a novel (Le mausolée des amants [The Mausoleum of Lovers]), it resurfaces in the caption of a photo (Le depart [The Departure]). The exhibition of Hervé Guibert’s Italian photographs uniquely illustrates this incessant interplay. Here and there, he wrote about Italy, and like a companion who never lets go of his hand, his photographic journey is of a twin nature: an echo, a stereophony, without ever being able to pinpoint the origin of its music.

| | | | This auction pays tribute to Serge Aboukrat, an iconic figure in the world of art and a passionate collector. Insatiably curious and avant-garde, he forged connections between tradition and modernity, embodying the creative spirit of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Originally from Nice, he grew up in an artistic environment influenced by figures such as César, Arman, Ben, and Yves Klein. A pioneer in discovering talents like Martin Barré, he was also a trailblazer in the appreciation of contemporary photography. This auction, held with the support of his family, reflects his eclectic world, blending paintings, photographs, and avant-garde works.

| | The Art & Authenticity Photography Retreat 2025 | | one-week full-immersion workshop for female photographers | | Eva Gjaltema » Mirjana Vrbaški » | | Tuscany, 17 - 24 May, 2025 | | Early Bird Discount for Applications submitted by 17 December 2024
More information: art-authenticity-photography-retreat | | | | | | | | The Art & Authenticity Photography Retreat is a one-week full-immersion workshop for female photographers held each spring in the heart of Tuscany and designed to clarify and strengthen your practice.
Set in a remote hamlet of Chiusdino, Tuscany, The Art & Authenticity Photography Retreat is for female photographers interested in intensifying their practice in a focused, regenerative setting — in an idyllic location, close to nature, free from urban noise and shared with a small community of fellow photographers.
The Art & Authenticity Photography Retreat will be held May 17-24, 2025.
The Retreat mentors look forward to drawing on 20+ years of knowledge, trials, victories, and lessons learned to help you crystallize your expression, sharpen your visual language and lift your project to the next level.
THE RETREAT
Authenticity is the degree to which an individual's actions are congruent with their beliefs and desires, despite external pressures. The Art & Authenticity Photography Retreat is designed to help participants recalibrate their practice in alignment with this idea — help them attune their work with their artistic integrity, develop their artistic core, and lay a solid foundation on which to build forward.
Through a week’s worth of analyses, exercises, photography assignments, reflection and shared inspiration, The Art & Authenticity Photography Retreat aims to help you achieve a greater level of authenticity in your work while at the same time achieving greater maturity in your projects. The Retreat is a chance to understand how photography serves you and to venture new approaches that may strengthen your practice. It is also a chance to take a break from everyday responsibilities and embark on a personal journey — A week just for you.
The Art & Authenticity Photography Retreat is a ‘photograph and reflect' workshop. It is neither a technical course nor a portfolio review. It is a unique combination of analysing your existing work or project, engaging through assignments, and reflecting in a constructive, empowering way - reflecting on your strengths, possible improvements, and future goals.
Because it is a communal experience, The Art & Authenticity Photography Retreat builds on mutual support, shared analyses and the intelligence of the group.
Ultimately, The Art & Authenticity Photography Retreat is about strengthening your resilience — as a photographer, as a person, as a woman — so that you may make convincing work that is aligned with your values and immune to external pressure.
