Faurschou Foundation Beijing has the pleasure of presenting A Lot of Sorrow—a video performance by the Icelandic artist, Ragnar Kjartansson and The National. The work, A Lot of Sorrow, is a single channel video, showing a six-hour long concert by the American band, The National. The band performs their song, Sorrow, repeatedly, in an uninterrupted loop.

Having been first performed at MoMA PS1 in 2013 as a live concert, the piece is an impressive demonstration of perseverance and strength—both physically and mentally.

As a reproduction in the form of a video installation, the visitors are able to experience the struggles and emotions the band members undergo throughout the performance. Depending on what stage of the performance the band is in, the audience will notice different states of energy, emotion, exhaustion, rejuvenation and relief. Each version of the song is, thus, unique; Each time the installation is visited or re-visited, the audience is met with a new experience, depending on their own state of mind, and the time of the performance.

It is the first time that a work by Ragnar Kjartansson is exhibited in China, and Faurschou Foundation is honoured to introduce his powerful performance video in East-Asia.

Ragnar Kjartansson has explained that his works are “always about a feeling, but there’s no story.” He works with repetition to explore the tragicomic in simple situations—through and beyond the boring—combining sorrow and happiness, horror and beauty, drama and levity. His works are often conducted as performances and video installations, but incorporate the entire spectrum of the arts; music, film, classical theatre and literature. Kjartansson was raised…

Foam returns to Red Hook Labs in Brooklyn, New York to present Foam Talent; the group exhibition bringing together 20 international artists selected through the annual Foam Talent Call for Foam Magazine.

The artists featured in Foam Talent use photography to investigate a myriad of historical and contemporary notions. Applying their own unique language of image and form, they examine the world, sometimes in ways that are strongly engaged or even activist in nature, at times with irony, or a lightness of touch. These 20 image-makers are constantly introducing us to unexpected applications of media and digital aesthetics.

OPENING PARTY: The exhibition will be opened by Marloes Krijnen (director Foam) and Jimmy Moffat (founder Red Hook Labs) at 7pm.
Date: Thursday 22 March 2018, 6pm - 9pm
Entrance: free and open to all, RSVP Required
Location: Red Hook Labs, Brooklyn.
DJ: Cris Dijkman, Drinks: provided by Old Blue Beer and Dirty Lemon

Human sculptures fill the room. Sculptures in movement, staged by the photographer Gert Weigelt. Created in cooperation with dancers in the studio, his black-and-white photographs exceed the limits of conventional dance photography. They are an expression of an aesthetic aspiration to use the camera to see and to show physicality and dance from an analytical perspective. And often with an ironic wink.

The exhibition "Gert Weigelt, Autopsy in Black and White" is dedicated to his studio photographs – staged body and portrait studies – which captivate the viewer through their accentuated formal rigour and aesthetics as well as their erotic flair. The photography on display is complemented by a presentation of his artistic films – choreographies of images in movement – which Gert Weigelt created in the 1990s for the German television broadcaster ZDF and the Dutch television broadcaster NOS.

Gert Weigelt trained to be a dancer in Berlin and Copenhagen. After completing his training, he danced in companies such as the Royal Swedish Ballet, the Cullberg Ballet, and the Dutch Dans Theater. His work with famous choreographers such as Hans van Manen, Jiří Kylián, Jerome Robbins, Birgit Cullberg, Glen Tetley, Kurt Jooss and José Limon had a lasting influence on his artistic aspirations.

After his career on the stage, Gert Weigelt (born in 1943) began studying artistic photography at the College of Art and Design in Cologne in 1975. He was nominated to a master class there in 1985. Even during his years as a dancer, he was already an enthusiastic photographer. His intensive work as a photographic chronicler of the international dance scene began, however, during his studies in Cologne. This was…

Hamiltons presents a selection of exceptional and rarely seen Robert Frank prints, including pictures from Frank’s seminal visit in 1953 to a coal-mining village in Wales, along with a selection of prints from his sojourns in London, Paris and America taken during the 1950s and early 60s. Frank’s endeavour to establish a new form of poetic, narrative photography is a common thread throughout these images.

Considered one of the most influential figures in the history of photography – it was Jack Kerouc who first defined Frank as a genius – Frank found fame in the early 1960s with his ground-breaking book The Americans. The series offers a profound insight into the country’s cultural and social conditions and, despite initially perplexing critics due to its unorthodox style, soon became and still remains widely regarded as a pivotal work in 20th century art history.

Its origins can be traced to Frank’s time spent in Paris, and his visit to England and Wales in the 1950s. In Paris, where Frank spent two years in 1949 – 1950, he captured the city’s beauty, viewing its streets as a stage for human activity. As seen in this exhibition, these photographs of Paris taken during that time focus on lonesome, romantic places and people in the city, in particular on the flower sellers. In London, Frank photographed labourers and bankers alike, capturing the city’s spirit following World War II. On one level Frank’s view of London is gloomy, portraying lonely individuals emerging from the nightmare of their recent history, each alienated as they pass people of a different social class. However, his outlook is tempered by capturing the hopeful faces of the children living there. Frank’s camera…

"…WHAT IS LOST IS THE IN-BETWEEN WHICH SHOULD HAVE FORMED BETWEEN THIS INDIVIDUAL AND HIS FELLOW MEN." HANNAH ARENDT

This exhibition is a poetic, abstract, fragil attempt to translate something of our times. Something indefinable, intangible but that might be recognised as the condition of one person, of several or of all: being in a state of suspension.

Neither a transition towards a possible future, nor an intermediate step, this condition relates to an inability to move forward and endless repetition of the same patterns. No longer knowing where to go, feeling out of place, having an indeterminate, blurry, precarious status and repeating gestures that have no meaning or purpose are its outward manifestations.

The state of suspension is often likened to being paralysed or stunned, but it is actually a constant, relentless, never-ending struggle to adapt. The threat comes into focus. Time seems to be running out. It is a struggle not to break free from temporality but to enter it.

Elusive and protean, the state of suspension is also something that defies depiction. How can its substance and reality be expressed? How can a person living in this state be represented, disappearing under the immediate proliferation and obsolescence of images, discourses, laws and technologies indifferent to his fate?

The New York-based photographer Lois Conner has been travelling the world with 7x17” banquet camera nearly half a century. Through the elongated format of her work she has explored the landscape and the temper of our times; her art is both contemporary and, due to her vision, ‘a long view’ that captures the eternal in the moment, timeless. Conner’s work is that of the artist-artisan: every aspect of her art involves the hand made combined with demanding techniques of platinum printing. In recent years she has employed digital technologies to expand the format of her work, embracing landscapes from the natural to the man-made. Her annual trips to China since 1984 have allowed her to follow the transformation of the People’s Republic and to share her unique understanding of the country’s changing urban and rural mien, as well as the vistas that inspired the country’s unique culture.

Conner has been based in New York City since 1971, where she worked for the United Nations until 1984. During that time she was awarded a Bachelor in Fine Arts (photography) from the Pratt Institute and a Master’s degree from Yale University. Conner has also taught photography since, including over a decade as professor of photography at Yale University.

The Photobook Workshop is all about the creation of photobooks, from initial concept through curation, sequencing, layout and design to eventual production and marketing.

Comprising of an intensive one week collaborative workshop, the course will cover the varied contemporary publishing models, from indie zines to high quality luxury editions, from traditional photography books to avant-garde photobooks that push the boundaries of the publishing medium.

The course mentors will work in close collaboration with the participants to create a book from one of their own photo projects and will cover concept ideation, image curation, sequencing, layout, design, material selection, binding techniques as well as essential aspects of production, distribution and marketing.

This Photobook Workshop is designed for photographers with a completed photo project by the time the course begins and provides a great opportunity to test different book editing approaches before committing to print.

Presented and hosted by Fotogalleriet, the Photobook Workshop will be led by Nicholas McLean, founder of the independent photobook publisher Éditions du LIC, and Alessandro Calabrese (art photographer, FOAM TALENT and Professor in the Master Program in Photography and Visual Design at NABA, Milan).

The FotoFest 2018 Biennial, March 10 – April 22, 2018, is dedicated to INDIA: Contemporary Photographic and New Media Art. FotoFest 2018 speaks to a number of contemporary issues in India including gender and sexuality, land rights conflict, the environment, human settlement and migration, and caste and class divisions. The participating artists are from India and the global Indian diaspora.

Organized by Lead Curator Sunil Gupta and FotoFest Executive Director Steven Evans, FotoFest 2018 will be one of the largest exhibitions of contemporary photography by artists of Indian origin to be presented in the United States. The artists were handpicked by Mr. Gupta and Mr. Evans while journeying through multiple cities in India and across the world.

“The artists, all of Indian origin, are imagining and responding to what India means today in its myriad complexities, given its ancient culture and more recent emancipation from British colonialism,” says Biennial Lead Curator Sunil Gupta. “They were selected by a process of portfolio reviews and face-to-face meetings with nearly three times as many artists than are in the show. The final short list was arrived at by assessing the engagement of their works with both the issues and the technology that define photography in the world today.”

“It is very exciting for FotoFest to be working with this remarkable range of artists,” says Steven Evans, FotoFest Executive Director and Biennial Co-Curator. “Some are well known to those familiar with the international world of contemporary art, while others will be new discoveries, as they are exhibiting internationally for the first time. We are looking forward to bringing this work together under the rubric of the …
