NY physicians continue to experience gender-based pay discrimination

Between 2010 and 2016, the wage gap between male and female physicians in New York has more than doubled, despite the growing number of women entering the profession. According to research done by the University of Albany, male physicians went from earning $11,931 more than their female counterparts in 2010 to $26,367 in 2016.

Peer review: Determining the appropriateness of care and making reviewers comfortable

Published 2/20/18

All hospitals have some kind of peer review system in place, yet physicians and support staff often receive little training on how to conduct peer review well. Conducting peer review fairly and efficiently requires critical steps be taken by peer review coordinators, physician reviewers, the peer review committee, and department chairs. By supporting these players in the peer review process, organizations can ensure they exceed the regulatory requirements regarding peer review and focus on physician performance excellence.

Family medicine and the role of obstetrics: Is it obsolete?

Published 2/19/18

There is a declining trend in the number of family medicine (FM) physicians receiving obstetrics privileges nowadays. These providers were once responsible for the family in every aspect of its development—from a child’s conception to adulthood. Policies and procedures and bylaws fall under the umbrella of governing documents, which the medical staff is not only responsible for creating but revising, following, and enforcing. It is imperative for bylaws and policies and procedures to align; conflicting documents open the organization up to lawsuits and can create a negative medical staff culture if physicians don’t know what guidelines to follow.

Medical Staff Governing Documents: Bylaws, Policies, & Procedures will help medical staff leaders and MSPs develop clear and thorough policies and procedures and bylaws for their organizations that comply with accreditors’ requirements and promote industry best practices. This comprehensive resource guides readers through creating both types of governing documents and understanding the connections between related bylaws and policies.
