Mitigating musculoskeletal damage is seldom taught in surgical training programs

Only 25% of surgical training programs in America have incorporated at least some degree of surgical-ergonomics education (SEE), while 1.5% offer SEE as a formal course, according to a study published in the Annals of Surgery.

In late 2017, the ACGME announced the selection of 30 resident-led projects to receive a portion of $130,000 in funding made available through its Back to Bedside initiative. The goal of the initiative is to leverage residents’ experience on the frontlines of care, as well as their experience as those most likely to see immediate impacts of burnout, to develop new strategies to improve the well-being of physicians by helping them make more meaningful patient encounters.
