Last week, California Superior Court Judge Ethan Schulman ordered Uber and Lyft to reclassify their drivers as employees in accordance with California’s new labor law, Assembly Bill 5. They were given a 10-day deadline to comply.

If their emergency appeal for an extension is rejected, Uber and Lyft plan to cease operations in the state of California — where both companies are headquartered — this Thursday, August 20.

The same day the ruling was issued, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi penned an op-ed in the New York Times calling on regulators to pave a “third way” between full-time employees and contractors. Regulation is necessary, he concedes, but AB5 ain’t it.
