WEB-FIRST REVIEWS OF BOOKS AND MEDIA
The Memory Librarian by Janelle MonaeJanelle Monáe's debut SFF collection The Memory Librarian: And Other Stories from Dirty Computer "speaks to both the sf tradition of mind-control tyranny and the way that the powerful marginalize individuals in order to control the whole. Highly recommended for readers of conspiracy and thought-control sf or of Afrofuturist works by the likes of Octavia Butler, Nalo Hopkinson, N. K. Jemisin, and Nnedi Okorafor." Matilda’s Secret, by Corina Bomann, is one of this week's starred fiction selections. "Recommended for fans of interwar-era and World War II–era historical fiction, and general historical fiction, especially with a European setting." In social sciences, Rachelle M Smith's Lies: The Science Behind Deception is one of this week's starred titles. "A fascinating resource for anyone curious about why we lie and the physical and psychological effects of deception." And in biography, Mark Kurlansky's The Importance of Not Being Ernest: My Life with the Uninvited Hemingway is a starred selection. "An absolute delight! Full of personality, Kurlansky’s book will enchant history, literarature, and Hemingway fans alike."
