PLACE CARDS OF LIFE
Sense of place is the sixth sense, an internal compass and map made by memory and spatial perception together. ~ Rebecca Solnit
Holiday parties are underway. Some spark chaotic frivolity, some dress dinner tables with place cards. Experiencing open spaces filled with roaming people in and out of groups is different than being seated at a dining table strategically set to elicit conversation.
Belonging to a designated place supports our personal need for stability. Who we are is greatly influenced by habitat, social circle, and emotional dwelling. Facing change in these respective places can be expansive and constrictive both within and outside ourselves. Negotiating physical, social and emotional transitions requires awareness and acceptance of how love and fear work together in shaping our soul, society, and the planet.
Social-Scientist-turned-Champion-of-Vulnerability Brene Brown became a star with her TED talk, The Power of Vulnerability. Having written many books about owning one's vulnerability and authenticity, her latest book BRAVING the Wilderness brilliantly delves into how the relationship between our sense of inner place and the outer world shapes us as a person and as a society.
The building blocks of BRAVING - Boundaries
- Reliability
- Accountability
- Vault
- Integrity
- Non-Judgment
- Generosity
This time of year brings to the foreground traditions rooted in physical, social and emotional place. Employing the BRAVING blocks can shore up our inner foundation so that we may enjoy both chaotic frivolity and dressed dinner tables with a heart rooted in love as opposed to one rooted in fear.
And by the way . . . the practice of making abstract art fosters BRAVING.
