| Planting by the Moon's Phases
According to this age-old practice, cycles of the Moon affect plant growth. Join The Old Farmer’s Almanac and watch your flora flourish. | |
|
Dear Eager Gardener, Call us old-fashioned, but all of these newfangled ways of figuring out when to plant your corn or your kale or your cucumbers seem to be making old wisdom sound like a new thing. We love a good app as much as the next person, but planting by the phases of the Moon isn’t anything new. Gardeners and farmers have been doing it for ages. Best of all, it’s a fairly simple process.
Plant your annual flowers and vegetables that bear crops above ground during the light, or waxing of the Moon … from the day the Moon is new to the day it is full.
Plant flowering bulbs, biennial and perennial flowers, and vegetables that bear crops below ground during the dark, or waning, of the Moon … from the day after it is full to the day before it is new again.
For more specific dates, there is a Planting Table in the 2021 Old Farmer’s Almanac that gives you the best planting days based on the Moon’s phases and your location. Going back to the kale, for instance, if you live in Area 1 (the southern U.S.), you can plant kale between February 11 and March 20.
If you live in Area 3 (southern Canada and most of the northern U.S. except for the western half of Washington and Oregon), you can plant kale from May 15–31, but your most favorable days are from May 15-26. |

Beware of Frosty | Of course, any planting needs to take frost into consideration. There may be considerable variations in the last spring frost depending on local weather and topography, but the normal last spring frost dates for locations across the country are listed in the “Gardening” section of The Old Farmer’s Almanac. In New Orleans, that’s as early as February 17, giving residents a 297-day growing season in 2021. In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the last spring frost usually arrives around April 30, while in Casper, Wyoming, the date is May 31. | How to Rotate Crops | No matter where your garden grows, crop rotation is an important part of keeping your soil and plants healthy. Crop rotation is the practice of planting annual vegetables with their botanical families. Each vegetable family rotates together. The benefits of rotating your crops include fewer pests and soilborne diseases, improved soil nutrition, and better soil structure. Of course, you could try to skip crop rotation, but eventually your plants will fail to thrive and your harvest will decrease. So, which crops go together? Plants in the same family are genetically related and thus share similar characteristics, such as leaf appearance or tendrils for climbing. The nightshade family, for example, includes eggplants, tomatoes, and potatoes. The gourd family includes watermelons, cucumbers, and squash. And you can plant dill, celery, carrots, and parsnips together, too. Here are just a few of the types of tips you can find in our 2021 Gardening Calendar: - Reinvigorate your houseplants by removing the top 1/4 inch of soil and top-dressing with fresh potting soil.
- Use an old salt shaker for sowing tiny seeds. Mix the seeds with sand for better spreading.
- Plants with a strong citrus fragrance will help to keep pesky bugs at bay. Try planting lemon-scented geraniums, lemon thyme, or lemon balm.
- Lettuce shaded naturally or by shade cloth will encourage the growth of a tender, sweet crop all summer.
- To attract dragonflies, create a water feature. Choose a spot in partial to full sun and plant a few native plants along the edges for wind protection.
- Remove the lower leaves of brussels sprouts to expose the buds along the stem. Harvest from the bottom up.
- Fill bird feeders to attract chickadees, nuthatches, and juncos—they will not only brighten the landscape but also clean up insect larvae and eggs on trees and shrubs.
