| Trump hits out at senior US Republican |
| |
| |
| Former US President Donald Trump has launched a scathing attack on Republican Senator Mitch McConnell , calling him "dour" and an "unsmiling political hack". Mr McConnell, who led the US Senate for years and is a member of the same party as the ex-president, provoked Mr Trump's ire after accusing him of being "morally responsible" for January's US Capitol riot because of his election fraud "lies". This was despite Mr McConnell's vote to acquit Mr Trump at last week's impeachment trial. Reeling off a list of what he considered Mr McConnell's weaknesses, the former president said he would back Republican challengers who "espouse making America great again", rather than the senator's preferred candidates. Our North America reporter Anthony Zurcher says Mr Trump's threat against his own party is what will give Republicans "the most heartburn". | |

| Tracking tech in emails 'now endemic' |
| |
| |
| Research carried out for BBC News suggests "spy pixels" can be found in two-thirds of emails . Such tracking pixels are typically a GIF or PNG file - sometimes as small as 1x1 pixels and all but invisible to the naked eye - which is put into the header, footer or body of an email. They allow the sender to find out whether the recipient has opened the email, how many times, on what device, and can even work out roughly where the reader lives. Our research suggests many big brands use tracking pixels, and those firms that do say it helps them target their marketing. Experts say the recipient should be asked to consent to their use, although this is often not done in a transparent way. . | |

| | | | | It's been a tough year for students. Almost all lectures and teaching has moved online and the university experience, for many, has shrunk to staring at a laptop in their bedroom. Hardship funds and partial rent rebates have helped some financially. But many students still feel the £9,250 yearly tuition fee in England is too much for what they've experienced in the pandemic. In Northern Ireland, students are to get a £500 payment from the devolved government because of the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Some have suggested they deserve £1,000. So what are the chances those in England and elsewhere in the UK get it? Dr Gavan Conlon, an economist specialising in the student loan system in England, says: "If universities were asked to repay £1,000 to all first year students it would cost the sector about £375m." | |

| | | | Wednesday's papers are focused on how the government plans to ease the lockdown in England, with the Daily Mail saying the "roadmap" will see restrictions relaxed from Easter until July. But the Daily Telegraph says whatever the government announces next week is unlikely to include a timetable. The Times reports that ministers plan to send out 400,000 rapid testing kits to households to detect asymptomatic Covid cases in the community. And the Daily Express says the Queen believes the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will observe royal protocol, despite agreeing to an "intimate" interview with US TV host Oprah Winfrey. There's more from the front and inside pages in our paper review. | |
