Looking for a rigorous, yet flexible, writing program?

Sponsor announcement and special $200 discount offer to Rumpus readers:

Dear Rumpus Readers and Writers,

We know you’re here because writing means something to you—it’s a way to connect, to change culture, to make meaning. That’s why we think you’ll be interested in what we’re offering at PocketMFA, a 12-week online writing program designed to provide the depth and mentorship of a traditional MFA, but at a much lower cost and with the flexibility for working writers.

At PocketMFA, we work with a simple but powerful goal: to help you take your writing further, no matter where you’re starting from. Our cohorts are intimate groups of less than 10 writers where you’ll connect with mentors and fellow writers who are accomplished, thoughtful, and deeply invested in your growth. You’ll also join a larger lifelong community of writers who share your passion—offering encouragement, feedback, and connection throughout the 12-week program and beyond.

This isn’t just a workshop. Our writing program includes:

  • Individual mentorship designed to meet you where you are.

  • Peer workshops that challenge your writing while respecting your unique voice.

  • Lectures, readings, and seminars during our Writing Life Residency, providing practical insights to shape your creative career.

  • Ongoing access to our community and exclusive services like critique partner matchmaking, our online writing studio, and continued mentorship and workshopping opportunities.

Here’s what Keavya M., a poet who just finished our Fall ‘24 cohort, says about her experience: I feel like my time at Pocket MFA has been really transformative. My understanding of craft was deepened and I felt really encouraged to explore my unique voice as a poet. My cohort was really supportive and insightful and my mentor was amazing. I think PMFA has provided me with some really invaluable tools and perspectives that I think will continue to shape my work!

If you’ve ever dreamed of a space where your writing is taken seriously, where your voice is nurtured, and where your community of fellow writers grows, this is it. The total cost of the program is $3,297, with multiple payment plan options available.

And since you’re part of The Rumpus community, we’d like to offer you a special $200 tuition discount—just make sure to select The Rumpus on the final page of the application.

Our next cohort begins on January 19th, and our final application deadline is January 15. We are selective about our invitations into the program. The groups tend to fill quickly, so please put your application in early.

Our Winter session mentors include Rumpus contributors Gayle Brandeis, Cynthia Cruz, and Julián Delgado Lopera, along with authors Kate Dramis, Robert Eversz, Jessica Handler, and Charles Jensen. You can learn more about our mentors for the Winter Cohort here and RSVP for a Jan. 4 info session.

Make 2024 the year your writing gets the time and attention it deserves.

Warmly,
Joshua Roark
Director, PocketMFA

Reader (and Sponsor!) Support Keeps The Rumpus Going!

Founded in 2009 in San Francisco, CA and now based in Asheville, NC with readers and editors all over the US and abroad, The Rumpusis one of the longest-running independent online literary and culture magazines. Our mostly volunteer-run magazine strives to be a platform for risk-taking voices and writing that might not find a home elsewhere. We lift up new voices alongside those of more established writers readers already know and love. Often, we are an emerging writer's first notable publication, which is something we’re really proud of. We believe that literature builds community—and if reading The Rumpus makes you feel more connected, please show your support! Our Membership and subscription programs along with tax-deductible donations made to The Rumpus through our fiscal sponsor, Fractured Atlas, help keep us going and brings us closer to sustainability.
