Flight risk, teacher-student sex and a hospital helicopter
By Drew Broach | Deputy metro editorFLIGHT RISK: Restrictions that the New Orleans Police Department put in place under a 2012 federal consent decree generally forbid officers to chase vehicles. An exception is allowed for chasing suspects in violent crimes, and thus police gave chase Friday when they found a stolen pickup truck carrying seven teenagers. It ended in a horrific wreck that injured all seven teens, two of them critically. SILENT NO MORE: Claudia Barker was a junior at Mount Carmel Academy when she started kissing her debate team coach and history teacher. Within weeks, she says, they were having sex, something she welcomed but which the law would consider statutory rape because she was only 16. Barker came forward with her story this week, and her former teacher, was immediately suspended from his post as chairman of the history department at the University of New Orleans. UP, UP AND AWAY: Almost a year after helicopters started whomp-whomping over their neighborhood, six Uptown New Orleans residents have filed suit alleging Children Hospital moved its helipad from one side of its campus to another without the proper permits and without consulting them. Hospital officials say the new landing spot is safer for employees and young, critically ill patients. All this and much more are in today’s Front Page and on NOLA.com. Thanks for starting your day with us. D.B. |
