Today is Thursday. Temperatures will be in the mid-60s to mid-70s from north to south with sunny skies throughout the state. Here's what we're talking about in Maine today.

Maine House candidate fostered a ‘hostile’ workplace at sexual assault agency, former staff say

  • Melanie Sachs, left Portland-based Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine last year under fire from her own staff members who reported that she fostered a “hostile” and “abusive” work environment. She is now running for the Maine House being vacated by Sara Gideon.
  • The wastewater at three of Maine’s public university campuses is showing no signs so far of a coming COVID-19 outbreak. The weekly testing of wastewater at the three campuses that house more than three-quarters of the University of Maine System’s resident students is part of the system’s strategy for preventing and containing COVID-19 while students are on campus this fall.
At inn, jail and nursing home, rule breaches let COVID-19 multiply into Maine’s largest outbreak

  • While a couple's decision to hold an Aug. 7 wedding in the Millinocket region may have started the state's largest COVID-19 outbreak to date, recent reporting has shown the spread of the disease throughout the southern half of Maine has been magnified by the apparent failure of multiple institutions to follow practices that are now widely recognized to slow or stop its transmission.
Dover-Foxcroft police chief arrested
  • Ryan Reardon was charged with one count each of aggravated assault and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.
Most things about school have changed, but Bangor-area high schoolers are happy to be back

  • Students have encountered smaller class sizes so they can socially distance in classrooms, and their movement around school buildings has been restricted to limit students’ opportunities to mingle and potentially spread the coronavirus. They have designated entrances where they walk into their school buildings, or they have staggered entrance times. But perhaps the biggest adjustment is that they’ve had to wear masks at school for hours at a time with few breaks.
Former worker at state senator’s Portland brewery says he was fired for pro-union stance
  • A former employee of Rising Tide Brewing, co-owned by Democratic state Sen. Heather Sanborn, filed a charge last week with the National Labor Relations Board claiming he was fired because he was pro-union.
Donald Trump Jr. stirs GOP base while stumping in Holden on Wednesday

  • He was the second son of President Donald Trump to appear in Maine in the past week as the state enjoys a relatively large role in the race between the elder Trump and Democrat Joe Biden.

UMaine, Husson football players frustrated and stuck on the sidelines
  • The student-athletes miss the thrill of competition and camaraderie of playing their sport this fall. Having to watch other teams play on TV makes it even tougher.

Dusty roads present hazard for moose hunters as season starts

  • Add in some expected warm weather, and hunters will face a double-edged dilemma: How to get the moose cooled down quickly and back to a butcher without the meat getting dirty.
