Dover-Foxcroft police chief attempted to strangle woman, warrant says

Dover-Foxcroft Police Chief Ryan P. Reardon was placed on paid administrative leave following his arrest in Bangor on Wednesday night after he allegedly tried to strangle a woman with whom he was having an affair. He is expected to make an initial appearance at Penobscot County Superior Court at 1 p.m. Friday.

Here's the latest on the coronavirus in Maine

Another 43 coronavirus cases were reported in Maine on Thursday, according to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. There are 597 active confirmed and "probable" cases in the state and the death toll remains at 140. Check out our COVID-19 Tracker for more information.

Maine’s new jobless claims rose slightly with about 2,600 people seeking benefits for the week ending Sept. 19, in addition to about 54,400 continued unemployment claims.

This summer has seen a surge in outdoor recreation across the state, including at Aroostook State Park in Presque Isle. Day use is up 18 percent and camping up 41 percent since last year at Maine’s first state park.

Sara Gideon wary of Democratic proposals to reshape Supreme Court

Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Sara Gideon said Thursday that she does not see progressive proposals such as adding Supreme Court justices or term limits as solutions to increased politicization of the courts.

“I know that there is this tempting conversation about fighting back from the left or fighting from the right, and I think that is exactly what we need to move past,” Gideon said.

Jill Biden to campaign in Bangor and Blue Hill on Friday

Jill Biden is expected to be in Bangor at 2:15 p.m. for an event on the economy. She will then go to Blue Hill to visit with lobstermen just after 4 p.m.

1st murder trial of pandemic focuses on woman allegedly in relationship with defendant and victim

Defendant Carine Reeves, victim Sally Shaw and 19-year-old Quaneysha Greeley were all in a relationship together, according to court documents. All three of them were also involved in selling drugs across Maine. Reeves is accused of shooting Shaw to death in Cherryfield in 2017.

Reeves’ murder trial, which began this week, is the first one to be held in person since the coronavirus forced courts to shut down in March. The precautions included masks, social distancing and the closure of the courtroom to the public.

Maine’s high court to reconsider ruling allowing ranked-choice voting in presidential race

Maine’s high court on Thursday agreed to put on hold a ruling allowing ranked-choice voting to be used in the state’s presidential election after Republicans appealed the decision to strike down a people’s veto challenge. The court granted the Maine Republican Party’s request on Wednesday for an expedited hearing. It will take place next Friday.

This woodland trail in Orono is ideal for a quick hike and birdwatching

Gould Landing Trail is an easy hiking trail that’s managed by the Orono Land Trust near the shore of Pushaw Lake in Orono. Forming a loop, the trail measures about 0.5 mile, not including a short side trail and a cut-off trail that bisects the loop.
