Police chief wants to funnel more funds toward violent reoffenders

BY DOUG GRAHAM | Staff writer

Police Chief Murphy Paul said the recent sudden increase in violence is "not the norm" in Baton Rouge and defended his department's work.

Paul spoke during a news conference Friday at police headquarters, which came after an outburst of violence that saw more people killed in the past week than in the previous four combined.

"What I want to focus on is what we can do to prevent these incidents from happening," Paul said, adding that most of the violence is being driven by a relatively small number of people.

In addition to celebrating Coach Kim Mulkey and the LSU national championship basketball team on Friday, a White House ceremony emphasized the possibilities of female sports.

First lady Jill Biden said the national championship game was a reminder to her of just how far women's athletics have come. "We've made so much progress but still have so much work to do," she said.

Angel Reese and co-captain Emily Ward presented the president and first lady matching commemorative LSU No. 46 jerseys.
