Good morning,

Welcome to The Scotsman newsletter.

'Grow up!'

That's the UK Prime Minister's message to the rest of humanity as he addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York this morning.

The address was the last stop on Boris Johnson’s visit to the United States which has seen discussions held on trade, the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change. Mr Johnson told the Assembly it was time for “humanity to grow up” and look to the coronavirus pandemic as an example of “gloomy scientists being proved right”.

Closer to home, skyrocketing gas prices, causing the supply of carbon dioxide to suffer, has generated an economic shockwaves in Scotland as the widespread ramifications of the issue have become clear.

An unwieldy combination of a sharp rise in wholesale natural gas prices, which have climbed by 70 per cent in August alone, for example, and energy suppliers being unable to pass the increased costs on to customers due to Ofgem’s price cap limits has led to a tumultuous time for many businesses.

Our business reporter Emma Newlands examines the nation's crucial sectors – already buffeted by a host of headwinds including Covid and a shortage of HGV drivers – now facing this additional obstacle in their path.
