Good morning,

Welcome back to The Scotsman newsletter.

The furore centered around the disorder and violence caused by rampaging Rangers fans on the weekend continues to dominate the headlines.

In an exclusive report today by Conor Matchett a police union chief warns Scotland could be on the verge of a “summer of difficulty and disorder”, with the high risk of a “tinderbox moment” due to heightened tensions around increasingly polarised debates, a police union chief has warned.

Senior sport writer Andrew Smith argues there "ought to be no debate whatsoever about what was at the core of the grotesque scenes witnessed in and around Glasgow’s George Square on Saturday night." In a scathing opinion piece Andrew takes issue with what he sees as "the Ibrox club’s deliberate obfuscation" on the matter.

Meanwhile, at Holyrood, the formal election of Scotland’s First Minister is set to take place this afternoon. There is unlikely to be any surprises, Nicola Sturgeon is expected to continue leading the country following the Scottish Parliament election earlier this month but Conservative leader Douglas Ross and Willie Rennie will also throw their hats in the ring.

Thanks for reading, more headlines below,
