Summertime is fading fast |
It's hard to believe the end of summer is roughly one month away. But don't fret, there's still plenty of time to soak up the season before we transition to fall. If a trip to Sleeping Bear Dunes is still unchecked on your summer bucket list, be sure to check out the Grocer's Daughter Chocolate for their summertime gelato flights. The gelato and chocolate shop offers 12 flavors of gelato and sorbet. For another summer adventure, lace your shoes for a hike up Mount Baldhead in Saugatuck. After taking in the panoramic views from atop the overlook, travel a few more steps to the Saugatuck-Douglas History Center. |

Police warn parents about posting back-to-school photos on social media |
Safety tips: Thousands of students across Michigan will be returning to school in the coming days. The Michigan State Police is sharing a few online safety tips with parents who may be tempted to post those first-day photos on social media. They recommend not sharing any personal information such as names, school names or locations, grade levels and ages, and teachers’ names online. New benefit: Employees at Kalamazoo Public Schools can soon receive payments to continue their education. The KPS Board of Education approved an Education Assistance Plan with the IRS on Thursday, Aug. 8. The program allows the district to reimburse employees for up to $5,250 in tuition costs. Reopening: More than a decade after it was vacated by the Chelsea School District, a former elementary school is less than a month away from getting a new life. The reopening of Pierce Lake Elementary School will be official during an open house at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28. |

‘You’ve been betrayed,’ JD Vance tells crowd in rural Kent County, Michigan |
On the campaign trail: Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance had a message for the crowd gathered Wednesday, Aug. 14, in Byron Center: "You’ve been discarded and deceived by the nation’s political elite". Vance delivered his speech to a crowd of several hundred people outside of Cordes Inc., a family-owned trucking company. The Ohio senator throughout his speech listed how Vice President Kamala Harris had a hand in that betrayal, saying her tenure has been marked by higher food and energy prices, jobs lost to immigrants and foreign countries, and more crime and overdoses. In remembrance: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has ordered flags within the State Capitol Complex to be lowered half-staff on Thursday, Aug. 15, to honor the late Tim Sneller, a former state representative from Burton who died July 11. |

COVID is climbing in Michigan, but this summer surge is different |
Rising numbers: Michigan is in the midst of a summer surge of infections, much like last year. However, the waves are much calmer than they were during the pandemic. Michigan is reporting about 441 cases and one death from COVID per day, according to state health department data from last week. The 3,520 cases reported the week of Aug. 3 marks the highest point since Feb. 24. More resources: Four nonprofit organizations, including three and Washtenaw County and one in Livingston County, received $5,000 grants for emergency equipment and training. Also in health: A Central Michigan University College of Medicine partnership in Saginaw will provide a $20,000 grant to support infant mortality solutions in the community, officials said. |

Hurricane Ernesto will actually influence Michigan’s weekend weather |
Weather forecast: Hurricane Ernesto will likely have a significant impact on Sunday’s weather, but not in the way you think. The hurricane will act as a blocking mechanism to the storm moving out of western Canada and over Michigan this weekend. This means the showery weather of the Canadian storm will stick around a touch more over Michigan Sunday. Twinkle, twinkle: Every star you see in the night sky forms from a nebula, which is a large region of dust and gas in space. One such nebula, the Lagoon Nebula, is visible with binoculars or small telescopes and is best seen in August. Here’s what it is and how to find it. In the skies: August’s full Sturgeon Moon rises on Monday, Aug. 19 and this one will be special. The upcoming full moon will also be a supermoon and a Blue Moon! |

Shepler’s will be Mackinac Island’s only ferry service for rest of 2024 tourist season |
Update: In an unprecedented move, Shepler’s ferry service will be the sole boat fleet taking people to and from Mackinac Island beginning Monday, Aug. 19 through the remainder of the summer and fall tourist season. What happened?: Mackinac Island City Council voted at a special meeting on Wednesday to allow the area’s other ferry firm, the beleaguered Mackinac Island Ferry Company, to suspend its passenger ferry services until Oct. 31 due to several major mechanical issues with its fleet of boats. The Mackinac Bridge will close to vehicle traffic during the 66th Mackinac Bridge Walk. Scheduled for Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, the event is expected to draw tens of thousands of pedestrians to the landmark. |
