Good morning and welcome to Friday. Here’s what you need to know to start your day.

It’s getting cold. Statewide highs in the mid 40s and upper 30s, except a little warmer on Lake Superior’s shore. Possible snow and freezing rain in the West, and windy in the metro. More on Updraft. | Forecast

He was only here for a couple hours, but President Trump made a mark in Minneapolis. The president’s first campaign speech since an impeachment inquiry began was at Target Center. As is common for Trump visits, protests began well before Air Force One landed and continued into the night. MPR News reporters were there for it all.

Trump managed to get in some tall tales during his stop here. They didn’t get past Briana Bierschbach and Brian Bakst. Here are some of the more glaring distortions of the truth uttered in Target Center last night.

“Trump hates us.” For the Sahan Journal, Mukhtar Ibrahim reports on how members of Minnesota’s Somali community viewed the president’s visit.

You can’t mess with the firefighters’ union, Brainerd. The state Supreme Court has sided with the union after it sued the city for cutting all union fire-fighting jobs in favor of part-time, on call jobs.

There’s money in the trees. At least that’s the hope for a group of land managers and scientists who are trying to figure out how Minnesota can harness its forests to get into the budding carbon sequestration market. Trees can store carbon, the prominent greenhouse gas driving climate change, and people will pay for their sequestration powers.

Vaping can be bad for more than just the lungs. Researchers are concerned vapes may be taking a toll on teenagers’ brains, too. But the effects might not appear for years. "It's unfortunate that a whole generation of teenagers are basically guinea pigs for the effects of nicotine in the brain.”

Fact check: President Trump’s Minneapolis rally speech
Briana Bierschbach and Brian Bakst | MPR News
Trump’s cascade from one topic to the next meant he often didn’t complete his thoughts. And he laid down fewer statistical markers that can be scrutinized than past speeches in Minnesota.

Here are some Trump remarks worthy of more examination.

Thousands of protesters demonstrate outside Trump's rally at Target Center
Matt Sepic | MPR News
Thousands of protesters filled the streets outside Target Center as President Trump rallied the crowd inside. The demonstrations were generally peaceful, but there were some tense moments as the president’s supporters left the arena.
Harsh winter, wet spring cast a shadow over pheasant population, hunting season
Jiwon Choi | MPR News
Minnesota’s pheasant hunting season kicks off this weekend, but the outlook isn’t so bright for hunters this year. Record-amount snow and rain delayed pheasant nesting by 10 days later than average, and the longterm trend of pheasant population decrease continues this year, the DNR says.

The White House announced that it will not cooperate with the House’s impeachment inquiry, raising questions about what’s next for the House committees driving it forward. The State Department stopped European Union Ambassador Gordon Sondland from appearing before a scheduled interview with House committees working on the impeachment inquiry. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders announced that he's changing his campaign strategy after suffering a heart attack. For the first time in history, American billionaires paid less in income taxes than their average counterparts. We discuss these stories and more on the domestic portion of the News Roundup.

With an impeachment inquiry looming, President Donald Trump embarked on another highly controversial foreign policy move: withdrawing from northern Syria. That territory is held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, a group that was, until earlier this week, protected by the presence of U.S. forces. On Wednesday, Turkish forces came over the border and attacked the Kurds. What are the effects of the president's actions? And what will happen to the Kurds in the region? The president of Ecuador, Lenín Moreno, moved the country's government out of Quito this week. Indigenous groups are leading protests against the Moreno government's proposed austerity package. The Washington Post reports that five people have been killed in the demonstrations, and more than 680 people have been arrested. We're also following how several leading brands, including Apple and the NBA, have become involved in the protests in Hong Kong. We cover all those stories and get to others as we wrap up the week in global news.

11 a.m. — MPR News with Angela Davis

President Trump held a campaign rally at Target Center in downtown Minneapolis Thursday evening. The event drew thousands of supporters and opponents to the area. Host Angela Davis chats with an MPR News political reporter about what happened inside and outside the venue.

Then, a discussion on ageism. Ageism discrimination is becoming a growing concern as more Minnesotans work past the age of 65.  We’re talking about how to combat ageism in the workplace. What do companies need to do to attract and retain employees of all ages?
