Good morning. Temperatures will be in the teens to low 30s from north to south with sunny skies throughout the state. Here's what we're talking about in Maine today.

What led a former Maine political hopeful to a lonely death

  • Troy Haines campaigned three times for the Maine House, ran a meat cutting business and had a family. But he also struggled with mental illness and drug addiction, which eventually claimed his life.

  • Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican, is set to stand for a fifth term in a nationally targeted race in a Democratic-leaning state. Rep. Jared Golden, a freshman Democrat, must run for re-election in the 2nd Congressional District — won easily by Trump in 2016. Votes with their parties could alienate majorities. Votes against them may dampen support in potentially close races.

It’s a unique situation for two politicians from different parties and the same state.

A Gazetteer and a Subaru fueled this photographer’s two-year journey across Maine

  • The pages of photographer S.B. Walker’s rebound DeLorme Atlas and Gazetteer are filled with gold lines traced along the roads he’s traveled. Considering he’s not originally from Maine, the ground he’s covered is quite impressive.

Since 2014, Walker has driven more than 100,000 miles across Maine to document people and places in the state.

  • The Maine Mineral & Gem Museum, which officially opened Thursday, houses the world’s largest collection of lunar and Mars meteorites, pieces of the moon and gems and minerals from Maine. The 15,000-square-foot museum occupies two floors in two adjoining buildings in Bethel, a small town in western Maine close to the Sunday River Ski Resort. The museum also has meteorites with extraterrestrial gemstones and a 4.56-billion-year-old igneous rock believed to be the oldest in the solar system.

The judge who helped start Maine’s 1st drug court retires after 38 years on the bench

  • Roland Cole did not plan on spending nearly four decades as a judge. The Portland native was going to be a teacher.
Scoring woes tarnish promising start for UMaine men’s hockey team in quest for playoff spot
  • The last time UMaine advanced past the Hockey East quarterfinals was 2012 when it lost to Boston College in the conference championship game. It was also the Black Bears’ last NCAA tournament appearance.

The primary reason for UMaine’s recent skid has has been a lack of goal production, which has been a common theme in head coach Red Gendron’s seven seasons with the program.

Bucksport has made a ‘to do’ list as it looks to grow

  • Bucksport has 41 economic development goals it wants to fulfill over the next five years. Councilors agreed to the list this week, setting the goals as the town continues to recover from the loss of about 570 jobs when the Verso Paper mill closed in late 2014.

How to deal with grief and loss at Christmastime
  • It's hard to miss the excitement that sweeps the world this time of year. However, for many people, the holiday season can bring apprehension and a sense of sadness as we remember loved ones who are no longer with us to celebrate. If you find yourself not quite in the holiday spirit because you’re missing a loved one, you’re not alone.
