Democrat Tammy Duckworth is the projected winner of Illinois’s Senate race, according to the Associated Press, a contest that could determine whether the GOP retains control of the Senate.

Kirk, a moderate Republican, was facing one of the toughest reelection battles in the chamber when he gaffed during a debate by questioning Duckworth's heritage. Duckworth's mother is from Thailand, while her family on her father's side fought Britain in the the American Revolution.
