November report shows half of jobs lost are back

The Labor Department's November payroll report, which was released Friday, showed the most job gains in the transportation and warehousing industry, followed by professional services, although half of those jobs were temporary. Half of the jobs lost in the first two months of the pandemic have now been recovered.

November job growth was flat in the hospitality industry, which is still short 3.4 million jobs since February, according to the latest federal jobs report. The National Restaurant Association's Chief Economist Bruce Grindy cautioned that staffing levels may continue to decline, citing a survey by the Association in which 49% of operators said they expect their staffing levels to decline during the next 3 months.
