Walmart to hire 50,000, mandates masks for workers

After hiring 150,000 workers to help it deal with demand created by the coronavirus pandemic, Walmart has announced plans to continue bolstering its workforce by adding another 50,000 new employees. The retailer also mandated that all workers wear face masks while on the job starting this week.

Major pandemics throughout history have had the effect of balancing income inequalities between the richest and poorest, and economic historians are discussing whether this will happen again as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. Among them, Stanford University historian Walter Scheidel says global government actions to protect workers by imposing shutdowns will keep the labor pool relatively intact, reducing the likelihood of labor shortages and higher wage demands.
