William Noel, a pharmacist who fears needles, sued Walmart after he was fired for refusing certification to administer immunizations, but the District Court dismissed the case. Noel appealed, and the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled the dismissal was improper.

Study considers retention effort for math teachers

A study of 473 highly ranked math teachers working in high-poverty schools in Tennessee has found offering a $5,000 bonus resulted in a 68% retention rate and a slight improvement in students' math scores. Even "modest increases" in teacher retention "can measurably improve student learning," researchers say.

The top 1% of earners saw a 157.3% increase in annual pay between 1979 and 2017, compared with average growth of 40.1%, according to a study by the Economic Policy Institute. Economist Elise Gould says the study reflects growing inequity.
