The Spanish Valfriu cheese factory put 5.78 pounds of Cabrales blue cheese up for auction in August 2018, and restaurant Llagar de Colloto paid approximately $16,150 for the artisanal cheese. Guinness World Records has now awarded the blue cheese sale as the most expensive cheese purchased at auction, a title that was not previously recognized before Valfriu contacted Guinness.
