Clinic helps pets and their human companions at Red Lake

Key to making the pet clinic possible was Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity's (CARE) Marilou Chanrasmi. She said this event was important for Red Lake because the infrastructure to give all animals basic care is still being established, “just like a human being, if we don’t take care of ourselves then we start going downhill, no different from the animal, we’re all connected, we’re all related.” 

 
Special session talks at 'impasse'

Chances for a special legislative session to divide up Minnesota’s budget surplus went from slim to none late Thursday after a meeting among legislative leaders broke up. Talks “reached an impasse,” said Gov. Tim Walz. DFL House Speaker Melissa Hortman said Republican Senate Majority Leader Jeremy Miller told her that a deal to split the budget surplus three ways is no longer in force now that the regular session is over.

 
Northfield farm expands land access for immigrant, newly emerging farmers

Though it’s been around for about 17 years, nonprofit Sharing Our Roots is trying something new this year. It’s creating a support system for beginning and newly emerging farmers and BIPOC farmers. It also teaches regenerative agriculture techniques while addressing food insecurity within southern Minnesota.

Judge halts Minneapolis 2040 zoning plan amid environmental questions. A Hennepin County judge has ordered Minneapolis officials to stop implementing the city’s long-range development plan amid concerns around its potential environmental impact. 

Art Hounds: Three shows that bring joy. Our Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. 

Jan. 6 takeaways: ‘Heated’ Trump, Pence’s near miss with mob. The House committee investigating the Capitol insurrection used its latest public hearing on Thursday to focus on the pressure that then-President Donald Trump put on his vice president, Mike Pence, to delay or reject the certification of Joe Biden’s election victory on Jan. 6, 2021. The committee is trying to show how that pressure incited a violent mob to lay siege to the Capitol that day.

Minnesota notches another new low in unemployment. Minnesota’s unemployment rate dropped to 2 percent in May, down from 2.2 percent in April, the Department of Employment and Economic Development announced on Thursday. That’s the lowest unemployment rate since the state began keeping track in 1976. 

Some clinics halting abortions while bracing for Roe’s fall. Abortion providers in some places where the procedure could be banned if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade are bracing for a ruling by halting scheduling for the procedure, transitioning staff to help patients travel to other states and creating networks of clinics that will span across regions of the country.
