Gordon is my mom’s maiden name.
My brother and I took on the Gordon name after college.
My mom was committed to us. Our biological father was not committed to us.
By taking on her last name we wanted to recognize and honor her commitment.
Commitment recognizes commitment
Commitment honors commitment.
My mom passed away 18 years ago at the age of 59 and I think about her all the time and miss her the most on Mother’s Day.
Thinking about my mom makes me want to leave a legacy of love and commitment that she left in me.
When I think about my biological father, I think about the fact that he had two sons and his name ended with him.
My mom was one of two daughters. The Gordon name should have ended with my grandparents but my brother and I each have a son, so the Gordon name continues on.
When you are selfish your legacy ends with you.
When you are selfless your legacy and commitment carry on.
When you are committed to your family, your team, your organization, your commitment is what people remember, recognize, honor and carry on!
My teachers and coaches were also committed to me. Coaches such as Tony Caiazza and Richie Moran changed the course of my life. I carry their commitment with me and their commitment and legacy lives on in me as I share it with others.
That’s why in The 7 Commitments of a Great Team I share a powerful message that teammates are forever.
But there is a caveat. It’s the teammates that commit to one another that are forever.
Essence never dies and when you commit from your core it carries on to the people, the team, the organization, the family, the community who receive your commitment.
I hope this encourages you to commit more to your work team and family team and I hope you read The 7 Commitments of a Great Team so you can commit alongside the people you work with and live with. I’m passionate about this and I know it’s going to make a lot of teams and families stronger.
Have a great week!
Jon
