By Bob Warren Well, if it’s a day that ends in a “y” it’s a good bet some part of the metro area is having to endure relentless, pounding rain. This morning it’s been the western side of St. Tammany Parish, where more than 8 inches has fallen. Streets are flooded and we’re getting more and more reports of flooding inside homes and businesses in the Mandeville area. Stay tuned on this developing story throughout the day.
There’s been a lot of talk lately about vaccination rates, which are lagging in Louisiana. But this morning we’re reporting that LSU is one of six SEC football teams with vaccination rates over 80%. That could become important as the SEC is talking about not rescheduling any games that have to be canceled this season due to COVID outbreaks. Speaking of vaccines, U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., got the first of two Pfizer jabs on Sunday. He had been waiting, but said the recent spike in cases and the delta variant made now a good time.
Louisiana lawmakers will gather today at noon for a first-ever session to take aim at overriding some of Gov. John Bel Edwards’ vetoes. How will the session work? Well, lawmakers will still hashing out the details Monday.
Sher Stewart was a well-known portrait artist in Jackson Square. On Friday, she was struck by a vehicle as she bicycled home from the French Quarter. The vehicle drove off; Stewart died Sunday. Her death and her life has left a profound mark on the community, friends say.
