Dear John, St. Paul of the Cross said, “If, during life, we have been kind to the suffering souls in Purgatory, God will see that help be not denied us after death.” Today, the Church especially remembers the Holy Souls with the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, also known as All Souls’ Day.
If you would like to learn more about Purgatory and indulgences, we have an All Souls’ Day web page that will answer all of your questions. Also, when you visit the page, you can sign-up to receive a free eBook, Novena for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.
You can visit the All Souls’ Day page here: ewtn.com/allsouls. This online resource explains: How to receive special indulgences for the Holy Souls in November The two types of indulgences What Sacred Scripture says about Purgatory The origins of All Souls’ Day Who goes to PurgatoryIn addition to All Souls’ Day, the entire month of November is dedicated in a special way to the Holy Souls in Purgatory. During this time, the faithful are encouraged to pray for them even more. We can have Masses said for the Holy Souls, visit cemeteries, and pray novenas.
This is also a good time to think of our own soul and mortality, especially in regard to making a good Confession. No matter our sins, God can always change us from sinners to saints. As St. John Vianney said, “The saints did not all begin well, but they ended well.”
May God bless you, and may God bless the Holy Souls in Purgatory.
