Update on the United States Colored Troops Public Sculpture Project

On February 20-21, 1865, five USCT regiments from NC and Ohio braved open fire and certain death at the Battle of Forks Road. While these men fought to preserve the United States, they were also fighting a battle for their personal freedom and the freedom of their families. It is this remarkable story that Stephen Hayes will tell with his new sculpture on CAM’s grounds. The first section of the sculpture was delivered to Carolina Bronze Sculpture in Seagrove, NC, the day before the shutdown. Stephen Hayes is now back in his studio at Duke University where he teaches and is finishing up the last section. The sculpture will be installed at CAM in November 2021.
