Note from the instructor

Lean on your peers for education

By Sharme Brodie, RN, CCDS

Last week, I was working remotely at home and decided to take a break from working on PowerPoint presentations and catch up on some of the reading I’d put off during the holidays.

I listened to a webinar about the 2018 changes to MACRA and read two articles about CMS’ changes related to total knee replacements. As I was self-educating, I started thinking about the people who don’t have the luxury of devoting a whole day to research. With all the changes that have taken place over the last few years—switching to ICD-10, Coding Clinic publications paging in at over 35-40 pages long, extremely long final rules, to name a few—I honestly don’t know how anyone keeps up.

Here are a few tips for staying on top of industry news, even when you’re busy.

Q&A: Cause and effect relationships between UTIs and catheters

Q: I have a patient with a UTI with pyuria and an elevated WBC count. There’s also recurrent plugging of the urine catheter secondary to sediment. I know the term “with” can link two diagnoses, but that it does not represent a cause-and-effect relationship. Is a query needed in this particular case to link the UTI and Foley catheter?

Product Spotlight

Even before the advent of ICD-10, PSIs were a measure of the quality of a hospital’s care. With ICD-10’s implementation, however, the documentation requirements became increasingly complicated and the composition of the PSIs themselves changed. Because of their implications on reimbursement and quality measures, CDI professionals need to understand how PSIs are formed and what their documentation requirements are.

Join expert speaker Mary Kay Brooks, RN, MSN, CPHQ, for this 60-minute CDI conversation and learn how CDI can make a difference in the world of PSIs.
