This painting was presented to Cyril at the Kani Ka Pila Grille and now hangs in the entry of our home in Kona. The painting recognizes Cyril Pahinui, now famous for his mastery of Hawaiian slack key guitar and his gentle compelling vocals with the spirit (inspiration) of his father, the great Gabby Pahinui, beneath the ironwood trees on a Waimānalo beach overlooking Rabbit Island. Through this heartfelt artwork and our Cyril Pahinui signature t-shirt, the legend lives on. Kī Hō‘alu a me nā lā‘au paina – slack key and ironwood trees…no ka poli mai nō ‘o Waimānalo. |

The 2023 ALOHA IS AWARD WAS PRESENTED TO Aaron Mahi! A worthy recipient indeed!
Aaron David Mahi, a native Hawaiian, was born on July 9, 1953. From an early age he gravitated to music. At age 14, Aaron was selected as one of only 37 students to receive a Honolulu Symphony Orchestra mentored scholarship. He graduated from Kamehameha Schools in 1971, and from Connecticut's Hartt School of Music in 1975.
Aaron Mahi was the second to the longest conductor of the Royal Hawaiian Band for more than 24 years, between 1981 and 2005. During his tenure he took the band on a historic trip to Europe where they entertained nearly 17,000 people in 19 concerts over 21 days. He also led the band on a tour of the mainland U.S, which was highlighted by an exuberant performance at New York's Carnegie Hall. Followed by a tour of Japan where they commemorated a sister-city relationship with Hiroshima.
Under Bandmaster Mahi's baton, the band was inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2003, bandmaster Mahi, fluent in English, Hawaiian and German, received the Golden Ring of Honor from the Association of German Musicians and was the recipient of a German "Order of Merit" for his perpetuation of German music in the band. Called the "Bundesverdienstkreuz," he was presented with the award during a ceremony at 'Iolani Palace.
Aaron was also the conductor of the Hawai'i Ecumenical Chorale since1980 and the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra from 1988 through 1995. For more than a decade, Aaron played every Sunday evening, at the Marriott Waikiki Hotel, singing traditional Hawaiian songs with George Kuo and Martin Pahinui. |
