Varroa mite update: The New South Wales Agriculture Minister says beekeepers will be part of the decision making, as the varroa mite response moves into the euthanasia and disposal phase. Almost 100 infected premises have been identified since the parasite was first detected in Newcastle about two months ago. Beekeepers affected by the varroa mite outbreak can access reimbursement payments from the state government.
Aged care COVID-19 outbreak: Several aged care facilities in the Hunter region are dealing with COVID-19 outbreaks. According to the latest federal government data, the Bayside residential aged care facility in Bonnells Bay reported five deaths last week and 94 COVID infections, which included 70 residents. Cameron Park Care Community reported 47 cases (29 residents and 18 staff) while BaptistCare Warabrook Aged Care Centre had a total of 41 COVID cases.
Fish kill: The EPA says a toxic discharge is unlikely to have caused a mass fish kill in Lake Macquarie. Hundreds of fish of all species and sizes washed up on the shore of Mannering Park a fortnight ago. The EPA says water sample testing shows it is not acutely toxic.
Domestic violence funding: Nine women's refuges in the Hunter region will share in about $500,000 for security upgrades. Attorney General Mark Speakman says the money will be used for upgrades like replacing outdoor lighting. The locations of the refuges won't be revealed to protect the women and children seeking help.
Newcastle Airport: Newcastle Airport says the arrival of two new defence contractor businesses is the beginning of a new era for the airport.
