Every business owner wants more referrals.
Why wouldn’t we?
They cost zero marketing dollars...
They’re often easier to work with…
And (on average) they convert better than cold leads.
In pretty much any business, referrals are gold.
But here’s the thing...
NOBODY wakes up in the morning thinking about sending you referrals.
People are so busy, that’s the last thing on their mind.
It’s up to you to make the ask and remind them (which I’ll help you with in just a minute).
But you can’t stop there either.
Because the biggest problem preventing people from giving you more referrals…
Is that they don’t know what to say.
They don’t know how to describe you and how you can help…
Even if someone they know needs it.
So let me give you 2 done-for-you referral scripts that will bring a flood of new leads into nearly any business.
It doesn’t matter if you’re an accountant, realtor, digital marketer, doctor, freelancer, or anything else...
These scripts work. Just tailor them accordingly.
My clients Chris Barth and Eric Bach used these scripts to reach record sales in their respective fitness and real estate businesses.
The PERFECT time for these is right after receiving positive feedback from a client…
For example, I’ll give you the format we use at my gym...
Done-For-You SCRIPT 1
(Exactly how to ask your client for a referral)
SCRIPT A)
> First respond with a thank you and positive affirmation about working with them…
“Mrs. Jones, thank you so much!
I knew that you would get great results. You’re one of the hardest working people here — I knew it was just a matter of time before you had amazing results.”
> Segue into pointing out what their referral opportunities will look like.
“Now, Mrs. Jones, I’m sure your friends and family must be asking what the heck you’re doing to get these great results.”
“And, Mrs. Jones, we would love the honor and privilege of serving people who are your friends and family.”
> Make the ask… with specificity.
“Can you give me the name of maybe 1 or 2 people you know could benefit from this too?”
(They reply with [Friend’s Name] who’s a good fit)...
“Great! To make it easy, I’ll give you a short message that you can send to [Friend’s Name] and me at the same time to make the introduction.” *** Now…
The ideal way to do this next part is with an email sent from your client to both you and the referral…
OR with a group text message.
That way you can take over with friendly and helpful follow up to move the conversation forward.
Here’s what comes next...
Done-For-You SCRIPT 2
(Give this to your client so they know exactly what to say)
SCRIPT B)
> First have them introduce you to the referral...
“Hey [Friend’s Name], I want you to meet my [trainer / realtor / coach / copywriter / etc.], [Your Name].”
> Then have them give “social proof” on how you helped them and tie in the reason for referring you...
“He helped me do [BENEFIT 1] and [BENEFIT 2],
… and I know he can help you to [Desired Benefit] because you mentioned that to me the other day.”
> Next, try to have something of value you can offer...
“He would love to give you [a book / free session / free guide].”
> End with an easy action step for them to follow…
“So all you have to do is [reply back to this msg / send text / fill out form].” ---
Now just fill in the blanks ;)
*A note about the “value offering” here*
If there’s ANY way you can have something for your client to offer their friend from you…
DO IT.
This makes it so much easier for them to refer to you.
It lets them instantly add value for the other person.
For example, in my coaching business we send referrals a copy of my Perfect Day Formula Kit.
It helps build the Know-Like-Trust factor… and it keeps me on their mind until they’re ready to connect.
Anyway…
When you follow these scripts you make it easy and valuable for your clients to refer you.
And as soon as you do that…
… you’ll have a surge in referrals resulting in more sales, more happy customers… and more referrals.
To Your Success,
Craig
