I hope you’re having a good day today. I’ll keep this message short. Every month I send out an email keeping you up-to-date on what is happening in the world of consumer privacy and technology.
Today though, I just want to ask you a question. It’s a question I get asked all the time as the lead for Mozilla’s *Privacy Not Included work. That question is: Why does privacy matter? Does it matter? It’s a great question. Especially in today’s world of TikTok sharing, Instagram influencers, Facebook feeds, surveillance cams in many homes, and Alexa knowing what we like better than we do.
For me, the answer to this question is simple. Privacy matters because it helps me feel safe in the world. When I feel my privacy is at risk, I feel less safe, more anxious, and less able to relax and be me.
That’s why privacy matters to me. It might differ for you. I’d love to hear why privacy matters to you, if you have a moment to share. Misha and I are gearing up this year to dig into research on consumer technology that puts our privacy at risk. We’re looking into the privacy of the growing use of mental health apps, the risks to children’s safety and privacy online, how creepy our consumer tech is in general, what that means for the world, and, of course, our holiday buyer’s guide.
We hope to use the stories, thoughts, and perspectives you share with us today to make our work as relevant and useful to you as we possibly can. And we promise, anything you share with us will be anonymous. Because privacy really, really matters to us.
Thank you,
Jen Caltrider & Misha Rykov Your *Privacy Not Included Team Mozilla | |
