The circular economy and unpredictable nature of public equities in 2021

The week kicked off with International Women’s Day, and Private Equity Wire marked this by featuring an opinion piece by Judith Hartley, CEO of British Patient Capital. The article shines a light on the brilliant work of various women within the UK’s venture capital industry and their contribution to all levels of society.

"Notwithstanding their fantastic achievements, there remains a lot more we can all do to improve gender diversity within venture capital. It’s incumbent upon all of us to make this happen," writes Hartley.

In other news this week, Six Nations Rugby secured a GBP365 million investment after agreeing to divest 14.3 per cent of its holding to CVC Capital Partners. The global private equity and investment advisory group might also be approaching a deal to pick up drug-maker Cooper for around USD2.6 billion, according to reports.

In this week’s podcast, Private Equity Wire sat down with Andrew Shannon, partner at Circularity Capital, a specialist private equity firm backing growth stage European SMEs in the 'circular economy'. The discussion centred around the workings of the circular economy, the symmetric relationship between investment and circularity, and what the green initiatives in Rishi Sunak's 2021 budget could mean for private equity. Listen in to find out more about the intricacies of circularity and finance.

Volatility has been the watchword in public markets since the turn of the year. In this week’s feature for Private Equity Wire, Kinson Lo, CEO & founder of Dot Investing, describes how the bull market on tech stocks continued in January before a slight correction as market dynamics shifted in response to the vaccine roll out in the US and UK.

The article outlines how fears of inflation and the so-called Gamestop effect, as a new generation of retail investors pile into unlikely stocks, add to the unpredictable nature of public equities in 2021, which may in turn attract investors to private markets.
