Per most states’ hospital licensure requirements, medical staff membership and clinical privileges are granted through processes outlined by the hospital’s medical staff bylaws. Those bylaws define the requirements for staff membership and delineation of clinical privileges. They also provide for various forms of procedural due process, including fair hearings (and any related appeals process) for adverse recommendations and actions.

Leadership insight: Employed physicians and financial performance

Despite popular belief that hiring physicians has a negative impact on a hospital’s finances, the results of a new survey of 47 health systems show that a majority reported no change in financial performance because of employed physicians.

When it comes to temporary privileges, required credentialing steps and timelines vary based on the accreditor and, in some cases, the purpose for the grant. Regardless of accreditor, however, a hospital’s stance on temporary privileging parameters should be codified in the medical staff bylaws. This resource provides some sample language for a Joint Commission-accredited hospital.

Winners, who will be selected by a panel of esteemed industry experts, will receive free admission to and recognition at the 2019 CRC Symposium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
