Better than nothing! Etopia's eco homes are carbon negative
Sustainability is the theme this week with news from modern methods of construction (MMC) building specialist Etopia that the first eco homes at its development at Priors Hall Park near Corby in Northamptonshire have scored a remarkable 103 out of 100 using the Government’s Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) for energy efficiency.
On average, the homes tested prevent 0.525 tonnes of CO2 being emitted into the atmosphere each year by feeding surplus energy back into the grid, rather than producing CO2 like most homes. This equates to 13.125 tonnes of CO2 removed from the atmosphere during the course of a 25-year mortgage.
Etopia was founded by CEO Joseph Daniels in 2015 with a mission to ‘build smart connected eco cities of the future that help solve the global housing crisis, while not contributing to climate change’, and the company has quickly won the backing of some big names in the world of finance and real estate. Lord Stanley Fink serves as company Chairman, while billionaire property developers David and Simon Reuben invested GBP19m in the business in September last year.
But Etopia isn’t the only kid on the sustainable housing block. Niche homebuilder Artisan Real Estate has this week launched an ambitious new blueprint for sustainable development, which it says is in response to the changing requirements of local people and communities in a post-Covid world. The blueprint advocates the introduction of green roofs, ‘edible’ gardens and green transport plans for sensitive city centre environments and is geared to achieving low to zero carbon development – as well as creating a more open and landscaped environment to benefit general health and well-being.
