Risk-on thanks to China

Early morning news from China gave the markets a boost yesterday, as the protests in China seem to be working in terms of the relaxation of some Covid measures. TreasuryONE notes that health officials at a National Health Commission briefing said that lockdowns should be lifted as quickly as possible, giving some momentum to emerging market currencies.

The rand touched a low of R16.94 before retreating to R17.02 against the dollar. The dollar had a strong afternoon against the euro and the pound but not against the rand.

In news from the Fed, various speakers have indicated that the Fed should keep hiking. This makes Friday's job numbers important, as a significant drop could force the hand of the Fed to relook at its policy. Some fireworks on Friday are possible.
