Proposed solution for traffic woes could cost woman her house

BY DOUG GRAHAM | Staff writer

To ease notoriously congested traffic at a busy Interstate 10 interchange in Ascension Parish, state highway planners have proposed building a roundabout directly on top of Anne Landry's home.

"I'm like anybody else. I want progress, but I want to make sure that it's necessary, and I don't want to be the sacrificial lamb for, you know, us just not planning well enough before we allowed many, many subdivisions to be built," Landry said.

Landry said she was caught by surprise when the plans were unveiled at a recent public open house.

Louisiana residents and businesses face a number of climate change threats if the state, nation and the rest of the world do nothing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 or sooner, according to an update of the National Climate Assessment.

Those risks include rising sea levels, intensifying hurricanes, prolonged drought, extreme heat, and a continued uptick in intense rainfall events.

And those threats will be more pronounced for the state’s poor, Black, Hispanic and rural residents, the report said.

The 50th renewal of the Bayou Classic will add another layer to the intensity of the rivalry between Southern and Grambling.

“Winning this game solves a lot of ills and makes a lot of people happy,” said Jaguars assistant Terrence Graves, who was promoted to interim coach last week.

This year's game kicks off at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Caesars Superdome.
