Dear Friend,
Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina!
Protecting Life
In the wake of the unprecedented leak of the Supreme Court’s draft decision, Democrats have ramped up their radical pro-abortion push. At this week’s Senate Banking Committee hearing, I was floored to hear Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen say that abortion is good for America’s economy, specifically when it comes to low-income, Black women.
As someone raised in poverty by a Black, single mother, I am beyond thankful to have been given the opportunity to live the American Dream. I believe that strong economic policies are the best way to give everyone — including single moms and their kids — that same chance. Democrats this week also attempted to use the leak as an opportunity to codify radical pro-abortion legislation into law. Thankfully, their efforts failed. I voted against the bill and will continue to fervently fight for the most fundamental American right: the right to life. Read my full statement on the vote here.
Supporting Survivors
In 1984, Congress created the Crime Victims Fund (CVF) to ensure that criminal fines are used to assist victims of violent crimes. But for years, that money has been withheld from victims as a budget workaround to pay for other congressional priorities. This week, I joined Senator Pat Toomey (R-Penn.), ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee, on a bill to right that wrong and ensure violent crime survivors receive the money they are due. National Police Week
I’ve often said that in order to protect our most vulnerable communities, we must support our law enforcement officers. This week we lift up and honor our men and women in blue as we celebrate National Police Week. I know that three South Carolina police officers are among the ranks of those who lost their lives last year. May we pause, pray for their families, and appreciate those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Click below to watch my appreciation video.
