Dear Friend, Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina! Fighting for Your Bank Account For much of this year, the Biden administration has told Americans that inflation was “transitory.” But after months of Democrat spending—and with another reckless spending package coming down the pike—even Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell admitted that prices are not going down any time soon. In a Banking Committee hearing this week, I questioned Chairman Powell on the issue of inflation, which he agreed takes its biggest toll on American families living paycheck-to-paycheck. I also challenged Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on the Democrats’ plan to make local banks report your bank account information to the IRS. The fact is: If Democrats were really only interested in making millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share, they wouldn’t need to surveil the bank accounts of nearly every middle class and low income American… but that’s what they intend to do. Yellen Avoiding a Child Care Catastrophe While Democrats claim that their “Build Back Better” plan will ease burdens on the average American family, nothing could be further from the truth, particularly for the parents of the 12 million kids under age five in America. Fifty-three percent of families currently choose faith-based daycares; the Democrats’ plan would make that option far less affordable, forcing many families to lose their providers. If implemented, dangerous proposals like this would actually increase daycare costs by thousands of dollars and devastate the existing child care system. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Ranking Member Senator Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and I held a roundtable discussion with child care providers from around the country to hear their concerns about how the Democrats' reckless spending bill would negatively impact child care in America. This week, I partnered with Senator Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) to introduce a bill that would keep America on the cutting edge by fostering connections between Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and the Department of Defense (DoD). These connections would not only open doors to new opportunities for diverse students—they would also allow the Department of Defense to tap into a deeper talent pool than ever before, bolstering our national security for years to come.
