Dear Friend,
Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina!
Keeping Financial Information Private
The Democrats’ upcoming spending bill is chock-full with liberal policies that will leave us less free and more divided. One of the most egregious proposals would have the IRS snooping on the financial accounts of virtually every American. This week, I had the opportunity to question Deputy Treasury Secretary Adeyemo on this issue in a Senate Banking Committee hearing. Unsurprisingly, his answers were less than satisfactory. Click here to watch our exchange.
I also joined my Senate Republican colleagues in raising alarms about the Democrats’ IRS plans at a press conference. And I discussed this proposal, police reform, and Democrats’ reckless spending policies on America’s Newsroom with Bill Hemmer and Dana Perino. Click the image below to watch our conversation!

As critical as it is to raise awareness about the Democrats’ destructive IRS snooping proposal, we can’t stop there. That’s why I introduced a bill this week to block it altogether. And I am proud that nearly all of my Republican colleagues have already signed on to the bill. We understand that — despite what the Democrats say — implementing this reporting scheme will not help catch the wealthiest Americans in tax evasion. But it will discourage unbanked individuals from participating in our financial system, disproportionately harming low-income Americans living paycheck to paycheck. Read more about our bill here.
Addressing the Border Crisis
For months now, Americans have witnessed a full-fledged crisis at our southern border, after President Biden reversed Trump-era immigration policies and rolled out the red carpet for illegal immigration. By the end of 2021, the U.S. will have seen more than 1.8 million people illegally cross the southern border, according to recent estimates. The Biden administration has now reinstated the Remain in Mexico policy, but it’s not enough. While legal immigration strengthens our nation, this massive spike in illegal immigration weakens us at a time when we must be strong.
At this week’s Senate Finance Committee hearing, I asked Chris Magnus, President Biden’s nominee to head U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), whether or not there was a crisis at our border. He refused to answer the question.

Protecting Religious Liberties and Freedom of Speech
At a time when religious liberties are increasingly under attack, I’m working to ensure all Americans can live and worship freely. This week, I signed an amicus brief in support of Joe Kennedy, a former high school football coach whose contract was not renewed after he refused to stop kneeling and praying after games. I also joined my colleagues in introducing the Campus Free Speech Resolution of 2021, urging greater First Amendment protection at public universities.
Freedom of speech and religion are cornerstones of our great nation, and I will do everything within my power to protect them. Read more about these efforts here.
Sincerely,
|
